I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - vacation time
    - sick time
    - flexible schedule (dependent on your manager though)
    - holiday shutdown

(look at that, the pros are when I don't have to be working)

    Cons

    - things move slowly
    - unclear processes
    - a lot of inexperienced people are brought in (very limited clinical trial experience) -- NIBR needs to provide adequate training

    Advice to Management

recognize the talent you have. it's recognized that you have 'favorites' that move through the ranks quickly and whether these people are actually qualified to move up is questionable. the actual people that deserve to be moved up or around end up leaving.

    Pros

Great people, challenging and interesting science, benefits, work / life balance.

    Cons

Not enough opportunities to collaborate with outside experts, no budget for travel to conferences/meeting, very difficult to publish & patent

    Advice to Management

Innovation opportunities, investing in new cutting edge technologies is slow and desease area dependent.

I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits. Some departments have flexible schedules, which is great. Ample vacation and personal days. They are also flexible about letting people work from home in bad weather.

    Cons

Leadership seems clueless most of the time. Everyone seems to have their own agendas and are not actually working towards the organization's goals. All levels seem scared of making decisions. Most people have to leave company for career growth.

    Advice to Management

NIBR seems very unfocused and scattered. It would be great if communication was clear and leaders could get on the same page. It seems like people are more focused on securing resources to do their jobs and not actually focused on science.

I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Compensation, benefits, time off, new buildings.

    Cons

Some directors let the power go to their heads and mistreat others.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate the non/scientists as well as the scientists. They are also good at what they do.

I worked at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Many opportunities to create own collaborations - both in-company and with academia.

    Cons

Some report too many meetings, draining time from research.

    Advice to Management

More consideration needs to be taken for staying on top of the latest trends in computational biology to support experimental groups.

I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Colleagues are generally smart, hard-working, buy in to the mission of helping patients. Salary is great, benefits are very nice.

    Cons

Turnover is WAY too high, projects get disrupted all the time. Seems that I attend a going-away party every week. Loyalty to company is low because company has no loyalty for employees.

    Advice to Management

Institute some sort of reward system to promote long-term talent retention. Clearly restricted stock is not enough when it's equivalent to a signing bonus at any other company.

    - Great Benefits
    - Excellent work-life balance

    Cons

    - Don't expect to be challenged
    - Not a place to help you grow/build a career
    - Has become very bureaucratic
    - Objective performance measurement does not exist at any level...it's all about who says the right story to the right people. Very political environment.
    - Filled with "C" Players...and continues to hire "C" Players
