I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great mission, mostly great people, lots of opportunity for junior- to mid-level professionals.

    Cons

Politics at the senior-level can do a number on your career path. Situational awareness is important.

    Advice to Management

    Empower and develop your people.

I worked at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The amount of resources at the company's disposal are second to none. Very helpful environment where I felt I could ask anyone questions pertaining to my education, and get a thoughtful answer.

    Cons

Very corporate, a lot of hoops to jump through for any given task. I felt like I was placed on the backburner a couple of times, and had to find things to keep myself occupied with, especially as a Organic Chemistry intern.

    Advice to Management

Expand the amount of Chemistry-oriented interns taken. I felt many of my peers were Biology based, and therefore many of the all-intern activities were heavily geared towards them. While I learned a lot about Biology in my time there, I felt I could have spent more time learning about Organic Synthesis, which pertains to what I want in my career.

I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are in general decent, especially with their 401K match.

    Cons

Managers are awful - they truly do not understand the scope of the administrative assistant role and they don't care, only to demean our profession. They under-appreciate our capabilities and professionalism. Most of the systems never seem to work, and if they do, you have to jump through so many hoops to finish one task.

    Advice to Management

It would be nice if all managers are required to shadow an administrative assistant day-to-day work to fully understand what we do behind the scene. There's an arrogance with most of the managers and they don't know how to work with their staff. Managers need to show a lot more appreciation and acknowledge our profession in a better light.

I have been working at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research full-time

    Pros

Good benefits and pay, stable job if you meet expectations. Expectations are high, and the scientific community large. You are expected to interact across the organisation. Great job if you have a backbone and can handle living with a foot outside of your comfort zone.

    Cons

High expectations, vitality-curve/stack ranking type of evaluation (research that...). Doing a great job is expected, to be recognised you need to enable others to to great work.
