    Pros

The idea of work from home was nice until you realize they just take it away.

    Cons

Contractors are treated like garbage. Can't use the gym, can't go to an office party or eat pizza that was ordered for everyone because you are a contractor. Managers don't even look at you or speak to you like you're not human.
There is next to no chance of Novartis ever making you one of their employees. Contracting agency then takes most of your money and you make very little.
No training or career growth at all and all contractors have noncompetes....so Novartis won't even hire a contractor because of the noncompete you wee forced to accept to even work there.
Not much diversity or fair treatment of contractors.
Basically made to feel worthless if you are a contractor. Mangers all have stay at home wives while they expect you to work all the time and not have a life of your own.

    Advice to Management

Stop abusing visa loopholes and outsourcing

    Pros

Great name to have on a resume. Fair pay, great environment, and many knowledgeable people to learn from

    Cons

Future career options limited. Very rarely hire interns to full time positions, even if you do outstanding work. Also, employees often move horizontally throughout the company, not vertically.

    Advice to Management

    Give interns future opportunities

I worked at Novartis Pharmaceuticals as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great coworkers, access to high level professionals across many departments for mentorship meetings. Allowed me to participate fully in projects. Great mentorship when available. One of the biggest pharma companies in the world allows access to great facilities and being on the cutting edge of business.

    Cons

Long commute (mostly my own fault). Downsizing during my employment. Empty office spaces. Interns were not allowed to use athletic facilities. Sometimes mentors were unavailable due to travel/personal business.

    Advice to Management

Let interns use athletic facilities. Change the intern on boarding process. Supply free housing to interns.

I have been working at Novartis Pharmaceuticals full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Management (Oncology) recognize good work, promote from within and have many assets available for career development.

    Compensation is strong.

    Generally, a stable environment.

For a big company, the silos are not as strict or defined. Those willing/able can work across different BU's or line functions to develop a more well-rounded skill set. They'll hire you into a new role based on your experience at Novartis and pharma generally so you can move laterally into new careers.

    Cons

    Smart people, sometimes disorganized.

Executive leadership does not always properly solicit candid feedback and are making decisions without being fully informed.

The new "Novartis Business Services" model seems to be a lot of lip service. The announcement was designed to suggest there will be "efficiency gains" and "cost savings" but the planning and implementation were clunky and ineffective.

    Advice to Management

Large scale initiatives like NBS must be handled better. To the extent this concept even improves our company overall, it was rolled out poorly and led to a lot of uncertainty, anxiety and mistrust through Q3/4 2014 and all of 2015 which adversely impacted the working environment and work product.
