I have been working at Novelis (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fair pay and benefits for the area if willing to work (or at-least pretend to work) overtime.
    Union Membership
    Plenty of OVERTIME
Plenty of People to listen to that really enjoy hearing their own voice

    Cons

    Union Membership
    Work to personal life ratio

    Advice to Management

You can not be everybody's friend so stop trying. Try Showing More Respect to the people that try hard at working rather than work hard at trying to do as little as possible possible. "Say Anything" as long it is positive an exercise on how to make the most mediocre action or event seem impressive - "Own It" baby

    Pros

Takes care of it's employees. Provides some training.

    Cons

Slow to act. Takes a long time to make a decision. Lack of technical expertise. Not a lot of real strict engineering discipline. Lack of mentoring and coaching. Projects lack purpose.

    Advice to Management

Get technical people that are willing to teach. Develop better plans and stick to them. Need more help with technical projects.

I worked at Novelis full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. It is hard on your family life but you have to make adjustments. The hours are long and the environment is hot and sometimes dirty!

    Cons

Extreme heat and alot of changes at times. It is hard for most people to ever advance. Working all holidays except Christmas day is tuff!

    Advice to Management

Be kind and friendly to all employees. Lead by your own example!

I have been working at Novelis full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits

401k match and automatic pension contribution

Great co-workers, depending on which team you are on

    Flexible work schedule

Nice facility, pleasant working environment, free soda
    Upper management is trying

    Cons

Somewhat mundane work, feels more like a quality control lab than an R&D center.

HR keeps trying to "improve" morale with changes that do more harm than good. Who doesn't want extra rungs added to the promotion ladder?!?

You need to be working well above your current level with added responsibility for a number of years before you will be considered for a promotion. Typically a promotion would come at the same time as added responsibility, not here.

For the most part the project managers get all the glory, instead of the folk further down the org chart who are doing the real work.

All the real opportunity for upward movement is at middle management and above. You need to really excel to be noticed in the trenches.

    Advice to Management

Actually listen to more than 1 or 2 people before deciding on changes that affect the masses. People weren't leaving because of their title, it had to do with boring work and low pay, don't let the exit interviews fool you. Listen to the people (focus groups, actually talk to line managers) to see what the real concerns are.

Project portfolio is still too bloated. You are moving in the right direction to bring more focus but we still have 5x too many individual projects.

    I worked at Novelis full-time

    Pros

Potential with mills and technology but not managed properly

    Cons

Worst company. No integrity. Big egos at the top that are incompetent. Customers hate novelis too

    Advice to Management

A complete overhaul of people and culture needed

I have been working at Novelis full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are good for industry

    Cons

Phony culture, low morale, lots and lots of bureaucracy. Must be a suck up to advance. HR just keeps coming up with more nonsense just to justify their existence.

    Advice to Management

Too much expectations other than just letting people do the job they were hired for.

I have been working at Novelis full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

the benefits are within reason though on the very low side. So, it is a paycheck if you do not have one

    Cons

    - Toxic work environment
    - Culture of putting people down. No promotions or development is expected (do not listen to the flowery language that promises so)
    - The company has no strategy or direction that is clear (seems to be all over the map with major losses in some ares)
    - still a culture of fear. the (say anything) is a popularity aspect rather than reality.
In Novelis it is all about appearance. Looks shiny on the outside and very rotten within the organization. You have no chance here, run from such a toxic work place

    Advice to Management

try to implement culture values for real. Treat people with respect and invest in their development

    Pros

Good on safety and continues to improve on safety.

    Cons

No very employee friendly. Upper management is more concerned about the bottom line. In addition if you do not cater to upper management then you cannot get promoted or a better shift.
