    Pros

surrounded by great people with great talents

    Cons

How is it possible for a CEO to have spent over $5 billion dollars on MA - and have achieved no gain? How is it that a CEO has, quarter over quarter, yr over yr, lost margin and revenue and NOT been replaced - Fired?

    Advice to Management

    Get rid of Ron.

    Pros

    Nice campus
    Nice cafeteria
    Nice exercise room
lots of time off, didn't need to beg for permission
good location next to free way
    excellent benefits

    Cons

Company was bought out by Attachmate, Attachmate laid off hundreds of employees
company can't compete and therefore is not growing
    moral is way down
Dead end job no way to move up
    No raises in 4 years
If managers don't like you, even if you do a good job, they will lower your bonus at the end of the year.
very political. some people got promotions playing to manager's egos while undermining their coworkers performance.
When things got tough, managers would only look out for themselves and threw the people on their team under the bus.

    Advice to Management

Attachmate should get rid the rest of the managers and then sell off the rest of Novell. The company isn't worth keeping around since Novell can't compete.

I have been working at Novell full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    There were really no pros

    Cons

Dying company with lack of cohesive vision and leadership. Continually look for ways to cheat sales people out of commission.

    Advice to Management

Stick to a strategy and do not jerk the people around. Pay sales people what they are worth so that you do not have the massive amounts of turnover that have been prevalent in the 2000's. Invest in a lead/demand generation staff and platform to drive inbound traffic for products and services

there really aren't any since the company is dying a slow death

    Cons

no future, no raises, outdated technology...

    Advice to Management

the company was so top heavy and bureaucratic, there was no way they could have survived.

None. CEO done a good job of communicating however, has not trickled down to the other levels.

    Cons

To many to list. London controls everything but has bitten off more than they can handle at this time.

    Advice to Management

Acquisition and Integration are taking to long.

I worked at Novell full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Learnt a lot , opportunity to do many things which would not have been possible at other , similar sized, companies. Work / life balance perfect, flexible attitude from management - so long as the work got done. Good benefits. Good colleagues.

    Cons

Since TAG takeover, and now Microfocus, the focus is very much on extraction of revenue from an eroding customer base. Over the years a lack of investment, combined with poor go to market strategy , excel driven management and poor senior management has resulted in increasing numbers of customers to move competitor solutions. Brand is already gone , replaced by Micro Focus, and expect the products to go the same way in the next 24 months.

    Avoid.

    Advice to Management

    Beyond hope.

I worked at Novell full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some of the long-timers are great. I mean, truly great people. They will do anything and everything to ensure mutual success.

    Cons

Average benefits. Below average compensation. Workforce too small to support all the initiatives and programs the company offers. MicroFocus management is TERRIBLE, has no vision or sense of value of the company they acquired. Executive leadership is solely focused on bottom line, really shows no appreciation for employees.

    Advice to Management

lower management is excellent, they get it. upper management is concerned with either politics, status, or making their own numbers. they could use a lesson in how to treat people from their competitors.

    Pros

    A few good people
they pay too much (above industry average)

    Cons

    terrible value brand, dying company
Novell has name recognition - as "dead"
unfocused, scattered, cluttered strategy - lacking execution

    Advice to Management

quit trying to run the company like a huge tech giant (like IBM) - start running it as a small company. too much process, too much overlap, cost of sales way too high. Sell or consolidate sales teams and product groups. 4 such diverse tech areas CANNOT succeed at $800M.
