I worked at Novell full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

People - I stayed so long because of the people.

    Cons

Too many to list, but all a result of the decline in market share and the acquisition by Attachmate.

  2. "Business Model Flawed, auditing customers to "catch them" will not grow business."

    I worked at Novell full-time

    Pros

Some very nice people work here.

    Cons

This company is in decline. The name Novell shuts doors amazingly fast or has customers saying that they thought Novell was dead. No innovation. "Innovative" products are years behind the competition. Customers are ripping out Novell as fast as they can to move to Microsoft. The Novell strategy is to make it difficult for customers to move to something else. And if they do, to make it painful and costly, uncovering as many audit findings as possible. Make no mistake, the audit group drives this company (ala Attachmate), not sales.

    Advice to Management

Growth through audit won't happen. You're pushing away customers. Get in new blood and new products now, or wither and die.

    Pros

Awesome experienced coworkers. Still have some nice amenities including the cafe and health center.

    Cons

Bought out by Micro Focus International who has no plans to have Novell products compete in the industry. They are milking whatever revenue they can until it's gone.

    Advice to Management

There are still some viable technologies and innovation within the company if only management would invest appropriately.

    Pros

Great facilities (the best) Great people in middle management Great pay and benefits

    Cons

layoffs and the toxic culture it creates on a yearly basis. You basically put your life on hold.

    Advice to Management

stop laying people off - no one wants to work there anymore

I have been working at Novell full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits and fellow-employees. Strong products but poor marketing. When I was there, they had purchased our company, so things were a bit chaotic.

    Cons

Poor work strategies, low morale, and poor management strategies. That was 15 years ago, so hopefully things have changed since then.

I worked at Novell full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The facility where I worked had an in-house gym.

    Cons

Poor judgment and bad decisions from the top caused "numbers" to go down so mass layoffs happened annually.

    Advice to Management

Take responsibility for your poor judgment and bad decisions instead of doing mass layoffs. Fire the top guys.

    I worked at Novell full-time

    Pros

Change is good but not much good here- the benefits are ok and the travel is limited.

    Cons

Lack of vision is keeping this company from expanding and there are many people who are happy to work 8 hour days.

    Advice to Management

Grow it or toss it- if all you are going to do is milk the customer base than just say so

I worked at Novell full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You can find good people to work with. Good benefits. It's a good place to hang out in between real jobs.

    Cons

Inefficient, ineffective, non-rewarding culture. Salaries way under market value. Management is paralyzed and persistently indecisive. Projects are started, stopped, and started again, and usually never complete. No one quite knows where the power centers are any more, so everyone is afraid to make decision and do anything. You won't gain new skills or much marketable experience here.

    Advice to Management

    Irredeemable at this point.

    Pros

For the most part, good quality of life. Home office in most cities.

    Cons

Customers really do not want to engage with you. The perception of company's solutions is terrible. Most customers think the company has been out of business for years. Extremely difficult to make net new sales. Most customers are looking to get rid if their software.

    Advice to Management

You need to stop kidding yourselves that Novell is relevant. Stop drinking the Koolaid.
