I have been working at Nuveen full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Customer Driven, Great Culture, Great People, Company cares for staff, Market+ Compensation.

    Cons

Limited upward mobility within Nuveen, but much more now that TIAA bought them. Review process doesn't include peer review. Inconsistent line managers.

    Advice to Management

Continue to conservative values and culture that Nuveen is known for. They align closely with those of TIAA, so it shouldn't be that hard. Focus on training the line managers consistently and provide them with the tools and education that they require to successfully manage and retain their staff. Make sure that they understand that their staff should be internally marketed and promoted. You don't need managers that try to keep people beneath them from rising to their level.

I worked at Nuveen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    * the people I worked with at Nuveen were wonderful and some have remained life-long friends
    * they have a very social culture (e.g., mid-summer Cubs outing and December holiday party)
    * good benefits (good insurance, 401(k) matching, tuition reimbursement, etc.)

    Cons

    * limited upward mobility
    * managers are hit-or-miss: I had a great manager in one department and transferred to another department where my manager would call out of the office multiple times a week every week (no joke) and was never reprimanded; in her group there was a 6 person turn-over (out of 4 roles) in 2 years. I mentioned this in my exit interview as one of my main reasons for leaving and, instead of being reprimanded, she was recently promoted to VP. So there's that.

    Advice to Management

Push out bad / ineffective managers.

I worked at Nuveen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Career development (educational reimbursement, large company with exposure to a lot of talented/brilliant people)
    -Benefits
    -Culture

    Cons

    -Management
    -Compensation
    -Career trajectory
    -Office politics

    Advice to Management

Needs a greater focus on overall effectiveness of work done. There is a lot of waste/busy work being done. Also a lot of employees who are not pulling their weight in comparison to others.

I worked at Nuveen full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great pay; excellent benefits with the recent integration with TIAA

    Cons

Stressful due to micro-managed, tyrannical style of my former boss; lack of appreciation for hard work; terrible training style; incompetence and a non-cohesive, sharing work environment

    Advice to Management

Appreciate the hard work of your employees, encourage employees and ensure that middle managers do not run good people away.

I worked at Nuveen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Surprisingly agile and flexible in its approach, even though it is an old, large company. Teams and departments share a common goal, no silo mentality. TIAA has made some significant changes after the purchase, but those are to be expected and are pretty good overall.

    Cons

Inconsistent middle management. Some just should not be leading groups. It is like that at many places, but at Nuveen it can be striking how disparate the quality of the management is.

    Advice to Management

Open your eyes to what is happening on the floor. Seek out and listen to those more than one rung below you on the corporate ladder. You don't, and shouldn't, give the "little people" your full attention, but some of the middle managers are tyrants and/or completely incompetent and it shows.

I worked at Nuveen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, but It is not what you know it's who you know to get ahead in this company. Reminiscent of a college fraternity or sorority.

    Cons

No flex time, work overload, negative and toxic environment.

    Advice to Management

Explore the possibilities of those already in your presence.Treat employees with respect to insure their dignity instead of finding fault with unimportant issues.

I worked at Nuveen as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Interns were encouraged to meet with employees across the firm.
I was able to gain experience by working independently on a project that was useful to my team.
Opportunities to learn about the industry and firm were presented in a structured format, and we were also given substantial resources to learn (off-site training seminars, online training programs, access to Bloomberg, etc.)
I felt valued, even though the program was just 6 weeks long.

    Cons

The only con I can think of is that full time job offers are hard to come by. The reason for this is there is low turnover - employees are often hired internally and are happy working at Nuveen.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. The internship program far exceeded my expectations.
