I have been working at NxStage full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-GREAT experience. The people who work at NxStage are incredibly talented, professional and smart! They treated me with respect during the entire process. They were very clear that not only were they interviewing me, but I was interviewing THEM. They also made it very clear that they're looking for the right people, not to fill a role.

    Cons

    - There are not many. They commute can be a challenge in the summer. But, this has been identified as a problem. So, flexibility is built in to the roles.

    Advice to Management

Keep looking for the right people and treating your employees with respect!

I have been working at NxStage full-time

    Pros

Great competitive pay that is significantly higher than other companies in the area.

Employees are able to work from home and have flexible hours. It's nice to be able to take care of life and not feel pressured.

Good discounts on nearby lunch places in the office complex.

    Cons

Management is very disorganized and does not communicate plans effectively.

The engineering team is run by micromanagers who paralyze project progress because they have to decide on every detail.

Managers often make decisions on the side and don't inform the responsible individuals for days or weeks. The individual responsible for the work is often working under different assumptions and is then criticized publicly for not knowing the new plan that changed behind their back.

New ideas, efficiency improvements, and outside experience are ignored. Employees are often chastised for "out of the box" thinking. Management usually steals these ideas as their own without giving credit.

Minimal vacation time was offered. NxStage offered two weeks less than my previous employer and I had to negotiate hard to gain another week.

I was hired as a full time employee with the assumption that my experience, engineering skills, passion, career goals, and independence would be valued. Instead, I feel like a temporary contractor who is overqualified for my role, supposed to follow orders, and only speak when spoken to.

    Advice to Management

Senior management should be more visible and personally check in on their employees and managers. Surveys are a great tool to get feedback, but nothing compares to first-hand observation and personal conversations.

Please empower your employees to speak up, provide ideas, share their experience, be creative, and make decisions. Understand that individuals may do things differently than you and if given guidance can often deliver better products more efficiently. You hired talented people to lead, design, and make decisions. Let them do their jobs!

Make your employees feel valued, actively work to help them learn new skills, achieve career goals, and present them with challenging tasks.

Please don't hire experienced product development leaders and then give them junior level work. Also don't make promises during interviews and reviews about career growth and leadership opportunities if you don't intend to support those goals. I regret taking this job.

I have been working at NxStage full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

NxStage has some of the brightest people in the medical device industry. Compensation packages are generally above average and include a surprisingly good annual bonus. In the engineering group and likely all over the company management makes good efforts to engage everyone and let you have a say and contribute to the final product.

    Cons

NxStage doesn't do so well when it comes to work and life balance or career development opportunities. Most people seem to be doing the work of 2-3 people anywhere else and add to that aggressive project schedules, poor project planning, and general confusing at the management level and it is a very difficult place to work and thrive. It's also not a good sign to see so many people leaving over the past 12 months. The office is located in Lawrence. Which isn't all that bad. However, most people don't leave the office complex even to grab lunch or go for a short walk.

    Advice to Management

Slow down a little. Re-engage your employees.

    Pros

Meaningful work, and most groups have great leaders. Recently more opportunity for growth available and some more cross functional projects

    Cons

Lack of systems and resources makes it hard to spend time doing things that benefit the bottom line. Somewhat difficult to find help.

    Advice to Management

    Communication is key
