I have been working at O'Reilly Auto Parts full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I've been here for 4 years as a Software Developer. I started as an intern and was hired on full time after I graduated and learned more through my internship and job than I ever did at the university.

My managers have always been wonderful. They are supportive in my career goals, constantly asking what they can do better to make my job here more desirable, and always lend a listening ear.

Anytime I offer up an idea for improving the way we do things, I know that it will be heard and taken seriously. I've seen drastic changes through the way the teams work together to get things done that are a direct result of team members stepping up and asking for change to better the company and the way we do things.

There's no greater reward than seeing the impact that we have on our team members and our customers. The ability to build tools to make a team member's job easier is a fantastic challenge and one that is always met with feedback and a sense of accomplishment.

    Cons

The company is growing rapidly, especially at the corporate office. Things get a little tight around here, but they are activity expanding the building to make more room for our growing departments. I don't mind having a space issue if it means the company I am working for is expanding rapidly due to success.

    Advice to Management

Continue to listen to your team members and be supportive of their ideas and aspirations in their careers. The more you empower your team members to step up and offer ideas, the larger the idea pool becomes. The larger the idea pool the better the chance of coming up with the most effective approaches to solving problems.

    Pros

Great culture and plenty of opportunity for growth.

    Cons

Staffing a store is a challenge because most positions pay very little. This leads to high turn around which means long days for store managers.

I have been working at O'Reilly Auto Parts full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The job can be very satisfying, very fast past. There’s always something to do. Room to grow if you were given the opportunity.

    Cons

Employees are not valued, they are overworked, management seems to be clueless as to how difficult the job actually is and also which employees are actually hard working and which ones are just slackers. It’s all about office politics the “who’s who”. Technology is frighteningly behind times.

    Advice to Management

Really pay attention to what is going on in the department, watch exactly what each employee does on a daily basis. Stop expecting employees to handle 100+ calls a day and manage 1200 or more accounts a month. It’s unrealistic and it’s poor customer service and poor business management.

    Pros

Flexible schedule, discount on parts, great team mates.

    Cons

Not enough support from management at the store level nor from corporate to ensure all members are fully trained. Expect long days, slackers not being corrected by management.

    Advice to Management

Promote within, teach raising members the skills needed to succeed and feel welcomed.

I worked at O'Reilly Auto Parts part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Refinement in technical and customer services skills, decent commission, and alright employee discount. Eventually the bad atmosphere led me to go back to school for Mechanical Engineering and working elsewhere in the automotive industry where I actually help create and implement aftermarket products.

    Cons

Pay is not what is should be for experienced and reliable individuals. As a result of bad pay, turnover rate is high which leads to inexperienced individuals being hired as all the experienced employees go elsewhere to go back into automotive repair. The people in management (District Manager) have not earned their stripes and there for do not understand how to manage.

    Advice to Management

Do not get promoted to District Manager just because you know someone. If you really care about the company and your employees, do not do that! That only leads to misguidance, micromanagement, and pushing away good employees.
