I have been working at OCHIN full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

OCHIN has a great mission and committed employees. Lots of smart folks here

    Cons

Senior leaders should be allowed to lead and not be told what to do by executives.

    Advice to Management

Company has grown very fast and more focus needs to be on the development of senior leaders so they can lead and not just regurgitate what the executives tell them to say.

I have been working at OCHIN full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic co-workers--smart, supportive, and great team mentality.
Flexibility with schedule and working remotely - lack of micromanaging helps us stay accountable and do our best, because we are trusted to manage our own time.
I love working here and am constantly challenged and stimulated.

    Cons

Switched health insurance carriers to one I'm not as crazy about, but still good benefits. Wanted to bring in my own standing desk add-on but was told I couldn't, so that's a bummer.

    Advice to Management

Let us bring in our own standing desks.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at OCHIN full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    * Nice gym facility inside building downtown

    * Assistance with public transit and parking in downtown Portland

    * Opportunity to take on new responsibilities, depending on role and manager preference

    * Limited travel opportunities, depending on role and manager preference

    Cons

    * Significantly below-market pay scales for the Portland, OR metro area

    * Salaried employees expected to work 45-55 hour weeks, no comp time or overtime pay, cost-of-living adjustments are reportedly sparse (if given at all)

    * Some opportunity for Epic certifications exists but this depends greatly on manager, team, and perceived immediate needs within the organization

    * Poor communication & lack of coordination between sales/marketing, technical analysts, support staff, and project managers

    * Disorganization - operations, projects, timelines, and expectations are in a state of constant flux, characterized by frequent down-times and technical issues due to lack of communication among & within teams

    * Collaboration - highly regarded but often goes unrecognized for anyone but technical leads and project managers

    * Management seems to hire SME's from a variety of healthcare and IT related disciplines, but tend to be dismissive of recommendations (or even commonly accepted best practices) if contrary to established routines.

    Advice to Management

OCHIN provides some wonderful opportunities for recent graduates, or possibly hard-working but unskilled labor seeking a career change, to acquire some more complex data entry and customer service skills while developing familiarity with a customized version of the Epic EMR.

Depending on individual managers and their assessment of the organization's immediate needs from month to month, there are occasionally opportunities for more experienced IT and/or healthcare professionals here also. For more experienced professionals seeking career growth, the opportunities for advancement are fewer, expectations sometimes unrealistic, and key operational roles are often filled by "legacy" staff that are fearful of change and resentful of newcomers. It's also unclear what the long-term strategy is for the company's growth into new markets, or how to (effectively and profitably) support and retain existing clients once the initial Epic EMR implementation is complete.
