I have been working at OLG full-time

    Pros

The security of working for a crown corporation and the good that OLG does in giving back to Ontario. There's a sense of pride in achieving annual goals, knowing your fellow Ontarians benefit.

    Cons

Too greedy when it comes to encouraging responsible gambling, Always looking at ways to part people with their money. Very little chance to grow internally, despite what end-of-year reviews and speeches say.

    Advice to Management

Let the people in their roles do their jobs. Real leaders encourage thinking and expertise, they don't stifle it because "they know better". OLG has some wonderful people in it - let them shine.

    Pros

Great staff. Exciting environment. Excellent wages, benefits and pension. Lots of opportunity for advancement. Lots of opportunities to learn.

    Cons

Part-time deal is 0-40 hours per week, but employee must be available for any shift in a 24/7 workplace with no predicability and change with 48 hours notice.

    Advice to Management

Work harder to provide part-timers with more predicable schedules.

    I worked at OLG full-time

    Pros

Lots of great people. Lots of budget to do great things.

    Cons

Little appetite to bring on resources to get projects out the door. Unless something has $50mil/year incremental revenue attached it's put on the back burner.

    Advice to Management

    Cut. The. Dead. Weight.

I worked at OLG (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay is above minimum wage and minimum serving wage. They open on long weekends so you can earn time and half. You keep your own tips and don't have to tip out. Opportunities to pick up shifts for extra hours. Benefits after 1 year even for part time. They hire from within so there is opportunities for advancement or a change in departments. Unionized

    Cons

Poor work life balance. Since they are always open 24/7 364 days of the year it's hard to get time off. They do not work around school schedules or any schedules in general. Time off requests get denied regularly. Only required to give you 10 hours between shifts so if you have a long commute home, you might not get enough sleep. Hard to change shifts with others. No consistent schedule... scheduled days one week evenings the next. Overnight shifts are mandatory 11pm-7am. Not lenient with time - if you are 1 minute late you get written up. 3 write ups your fired. Supervisors show favouritism. Tips vary some nights you can make over $100 other nights $10. Not only restaurant work, there is a gaming floor where you serve tea coffee pop and alcohol. Lots of cleaning. Gaming floor can be loud and busy. Gambling addictions can be sad to watch.

    Advice to Management

Be more compassionate towards employees. Have a better work/life balance. Communicate with employees don't just hide in your office. Respond to emails. Value your staff more and don't try and get them fired.
