I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

They looked good at the "Hiring Our Veterans", Job Fair. My friend qualified for the open maintenance technician position. HR saw His resume at the job fair and said to him, "We would like to have you". Thou, HR did not reply to his application and resume.

    Cons

Politics, Politics, Politics!!! What a slap in the face to every veteran that applied to ON at the "Hiring Our Veterans", Job Fair. He was told to go online and apply. While all this time they got publicity from the news Paper and TV. They did not want to hire a qualified veteran. If it were not for veterans, there would be no ON. Mad, you bet I am Mad. They used military veterans just for advertizing their company ON name. I plan on quiting.

    Advice to Management

Hire the very ones whom are willing to die for your freedom. What is wrong with your HR Department? I bet that you could not count the veterans you have hired at ON on one hand. Shame on you!!!

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people there really are great to work with. Compensation is decent, benefits are good. IT systems are marginal - designed for minimizing IT cost, not user productity/satisfaction

    Cons

Used to have Great people, but whittled down to just good people. Never ending move of jobs offshore, and appearantly no interest in being part of a US jobs program. Work 10-12 hr days, forget a night life with calls to asia.

    Advice to Management

Consider a profit sharing program, or a much broader stock participation program instead of keeping 90% at the top levels. Stop treating employees like the don't have other options just because there is no work in Phoenix.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

    Decent benefits
    Adequate salary
Interesting work when the ON infrastructure doesn't get in the way.

    Cons

Structured via "silos" where upper managers openly refuse to share information with other groups.
100% focus on cost cutting without any focus on minimizing waste (there is a lot of it).
    Poor communication with employees.
Tons of promises by upper management (monetary, career growth, etc) with no mechanism (funding, training) given to supervisors so that they can implement.

    Advice to Management

Instead of telling employees that their input is valued and then totally ignoring it, consider listening to some of the people in all of those companies that you're purchasing and implementing those things that made them successful.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

None to really speak of (benefits, salaries, etc are largely non competitive)

    Cons

ON buys firms to grow since they are not innovative enough themselves to invest in R&D. Their management culture/style is terrible....it's all about cost cutting without looking at the true "Cost" of trying to be a skinflint. They don't listen to their acquired talent from firms they procure so they never innovate. It's amazing. They will never be a successful company - the productive staff leave & won't tolerate their non collaborative culture...I've seen it with my own eyes. ON is going nowhere & its by their own fault (what a shame!)

    Advice to Management

Listen to your acquired talent (they often bring world class ideas/approaches that ON could leverage). Define Dept function Roles & Responsibilities. Eliminate of cronyism (make objective, total cost based decisions, not subjective decisions based off old boys network relationships). Stop being so cheap....t-shirts at a company picnic raffle. Really?!

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Good people and friendly environment
    -No long working hours
-It is a good place to work a few years before retirement if you are looking for a mellow environment without any challenges and career advancement.

    Cons

    - There is no smart person working in engineering there.
    - Engineers are not up to date and knowledgeable. Don't expect to learn any thing new working there
    - Old technology and no intentions to make any change
    - Everything is as slow as it gets!
    - No one really works! They just kill their time 7-5
    - Low salaries in comparison to all other technology companies in Oregon
    - Higher managers in Phoenix are a bunch of finance people who do not have any clue to run a technology company, they are excellent in not spending any extra pennies though!
    - Very bad orientation at the beginning. You are on your own, it would take up to a year to learn what you need to do your job.

    Advice to Management

The management runs the company like property management companies. This is supposed to be a technology company for god’s sake! Old out of date management tricks are dead, please update yourself! There is no clear career advancement and everything over there is dull. Please at least try to make career advancement an option.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time

    Pros

ON pays a competitive salary. ON is a conglomerate of acquired older technology semiconductor manufacturers. ON employs many talented people globally.

    Cons

The good 'ol boy Motorola culture is still around.

There is no manufacturing at the corporate headquarters in Phoenix. To be an effective engineer working from Corporate, you have to work virtually on product engineering projects with engineers from the acquired factories. Many times, the engineers from the acquired factories are resentful towards those from corporate making it difficult to succeed.

There is no trust between business units. Business units have to compete amongst each other and the only measure is profit.

Top down, directive management style in some business units. ON's management culture is a few generations back.

There is no employee training in the myriad of ON systems. The multiple ON systems are a direct result of growth through acquisition. There is no synchronization of the multiple data systems inherited from acquisition.

    Advice to Management

Corporate should eliminate engineering and just hire business managers to track profits by product lines.

I have been working at ON Semiconductor as an intern

    Pros

The team is really nice and understanding when it comes to a work life balance. Went out to lunch every Friday and it was great.

    Cons

Mentor was degrading and blamed many issues on me the intern. The systems are old and messy to the point even the employees doesn't always get things right. Get mixed requests from teams on what they need done. Mentor needs to be hidden away in his desk so he never has to speak to an intern ever again.

    Advice to Management

Nothing would get done even if I had something to say.

Current Employee - Strategic Sourcing Manager

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Not a lot of actual supply chain experience in the management team of Global Supply Chain Operations. They are all transplants from other organizations within ON Semi, basically just completing a "tour of duty" as a favor to executive management. Great opportunity to bring actual supply chain experience to the team, just not in an overly offensive way.

    Cons

There is NO chance of lower level sourcing managers to be promoted into senior positions within On semi GSCO. They will burn you out and kick you to the curb, without hesitation. And if they have the opportunity, management will outsource your position to Asia, while you are still in it!

    Advice to Management

Recognize that your sourcing managers and buyers are your strategic assets in accomplishing the corporate initiatives and protect them in their daily struggles to accomplish their goals! Common sense at other companies, but not at ON Semi.

    Pros

working hours are flexibel, we get a company car without fuel car which is good for the envirenement, etc.

    Cons

Internal spec are very hard to understand, huge paper work needed for any simple action, priority is given to quarterly revenue rather than to quality, etc... A bit demotivationg sometimes..

    Advice to Management

Please give us the room to make a qualitative work...

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The company has excellent code of conduct. Being a technology company, the processes and way of work is fast and efficient. There is so much learning in this company.

    Cons

Important aspect of the code of conduct is not lived up with as how it was being professed. "Old boys club" ruled the senior management circle. Retaliation is prevalent especially if you did not sing in chorus with favored supplier of the senior manager. Very few or no internal opportunities. Your position today will be yours until maybe next 10 years.

    Advice to Management

Retire your senior managers and infuse fresh blood until its not too late.
