I worked at ON Semiconductor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

ON has some great local talent and people to work with.

    Cons

They are very cheap and will lay off at the drop of a hat rather than try work through it.

I worked at ON Semiconductor (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good Assignments. Good to have direct contact with the customer and the engineer.

    Cons

Power Games between employees. An ageist/sexist environment.

    Advice to Management

Provide better feedback. Don't put excessive trust in your favorites and discount the others.

I worked at ON Semiconductor full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You get to grow professionally due to every day challenges and teams interactions. Reasonable work hours culture. Reasonable place to work for someone who has a family, but not amazing. Good environment for a young professional.

    Cons

San Jose office is now a branch of Arizona business. Lack of understanding of the most important silicon valley value which is innovation and R&D.
Succeed by making yourself indispensable by withholding information from others.

I worked at ON Semiconductor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people, including first level managers, are great. There are plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. The benefits are reasonable, and you can try your hand at many different parts of the ASIC design flow.

    Cons

It's a public company that makes decisions based on quarterly financials rather than long term planning. They would rather buy/hire talent than develop it internally. Very little outside training. Still using older methodologies.

    Advice to Management

    Invest in employee training.

I worked at ON Semiconductor full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

My Fellow engineers were great to work with. They were knowledgeable and experienced. Benefits were okay but could be improved.

    Cons

You will never retire from this company. They look only at the bottom line. Experienced workers are usually forced out when they need to make cuts thus leaving other engineers with a heavy workload and unable to meet schedules

I have been working at ON Semiconductor full-time

    Pros

ON pays a competitive salary. ON is a conglomerate of acquired older technology semiconductor manufacturers. ON employs many talented people globally.

    Cons

The good 'ol boy Motorola culture is still around.

There is no manufacturing at the corporate headquarters in Phoenix. To be an effective engineer working from Corporate, you have to work virtually on product engineering projects with engineers from the acquired factories. Many times, the engineers from the acquired factories are resentful towards those from corporate making it difficult to succeed.

There is no trust between business units. Business units have to compete amongst each other and the only measure is profit.

Top down, directive management style in some business units. ON's management culture is a few generations back.

There is no employee training in the myriad of ON systems. The multiple ON systems are a direct result of growth through acquisition. There is no synchronization of the multiple data systems inherited from acquisition.

    Advice to Management

Corporate should eliminate engineering and just hire business managers to track profits by product lines.
