I worked at ORAU full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My mentor was great and I learned a lot.

    Cons

Taxes are not taken out of your stipend and have to be paid quarterly. The bureaucracy can be tedious to deal with. You have to pay for your own health insurance.

I have been working at ORAU full-time

    Pros

Decent Insurance. HR staff is very nice and helpful.
Can have high variation in work.
Quality of experience is very dependent on mentor (think grad school advisor)

    Cons

If ASTRO intern, taxes are not removed from paycheck and will have to pay at the end of the year. Little assistance in filing taxes.
Quality of experience is very dependent on mentor (think grad school advisor)

    Advice to Management

Provide assistance for taxes. More oversight of mentors and information on mentoring for mentors. A better way to contact ORAU for advice for problems with mentors would be helpful as well.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Friendly, helpful employees who are always willing to share their opinions and tips. Their advice was especially helpful when considering career choices. There is also opportunity for pursuit of one's own research, which is very rewarding.

    Cons

My commute was not the most ideal (hour or more by car) but that was really the only negative experience besides the process after the initial hiring. Entry into the government as a federal employee took a long time.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. The administration was very friendly and enjoyable. There was always prompt, open communication about meeting deadlines.
