I have been working at Oakland Community College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The dedication to student success by the support staff goes way beyond a job!

    Cons

Not a lot of opportunity for transfer internally among work groups

    Advice to Management

You should take more insight and suggestions from front line staff on new procedures and application processes

I worked at Oakland Community College (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It is easy to move up in steps to increase your pay.

    Cons

In the department I worked in, you weren't given any support by the full time instructors. You are given materials- text and ancillaries- and you are responsible for putting your class together. Depending on the class, this included setting up your own labs.

    Advice to Management

Hire Deans that actually have an inda about teaching. Students are customers, BUT they also need to have a standard of knowledge that must be attained.

I worked at Oakland Community College part-time

    Pros

Great program if you are white. STAY AWAY BLACK MEN. THIS PROGRAM IS NOT FOR YOU. A complete waste of time and money.

    Cons

They don't tell you that law firms want experience. School just wants your money.

    Advice to Management

Tell students up front about law firms wanting experience.

    Pros

Good pay and great caring staff!

    Cons

Thinly staffed and underresourced! Dysfunctional Senior Cabinet makes the work difficult to accomplish. Perhaps the new CEO, Provenzano can make a difference.

    Advice to Management

Select a team that can work together for student success, not personal fiefdom!

I worked at Oakland Community College (More than 5 years)

    Pros

easy going atmosphere and very nice support staff

    Cons

arbitrary and capricious administration. The part time faculty needs a union.

    Advice to Management

you have a high turnover, especially in Humanities: that should tell you something. You are losing enrollment for a reason.

    Pros

Great staff to work with. Super caring and dedicated.

    Cons

Dean and higher ups have a bit of a disconnect from the faculty.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the students and teachers not your board members who are disconnected from the learning process. It's about education not a corporation

I have been working at Oakland Community College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Wonderful Job, excellent co-workers and management.

    Cons

Yearly employment only extends from Fall to the Summer I semester. So from July through August there is no employment. It is also part-time only. This is not the choice of the Skills center, but it is mandated by the college overall. They send out a letter each year letting employees know that employment is not guaranteed after winter, but usually they let the skills center continue to operate until the end of may or beginning of June.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work. Very satisfied.

I worked at Oakland Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The students were great to work with, and everyone in the Academic Support Center was fantastic, including my direct supervisors. If you are tutoring, you can set your own schedule.

    Cons

The president felt that the academic support center was unnecessary, believing instead that professors should spend their time tutoring individual students, so there was always uncertainty over whether there would be there would be money to continue employing tutors and supplemental instructors. Also, the pay was terrible. The hourly rates had been the same for over ten years and showed no signs of being increased in the near future.

    Advice to Management

This is a publicly funded college, not a for-profit business. Don't try to run it that way. Appreciate your employees and make sure they receive a decent wage.

I worked at Oakland Community College part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of students to help out so it was never boring. Scheduling was also pretty flexible considering most of the employees were students

    Cons

There was a bit of condescension from above that got old and tiring pretty quickly but other than that it was fine.

    Advice to Management

    Uplift don't beat down

I worked at Oakland Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working along side of like minded people helping students in need was rewarding.

    Cons

The lack of advertising for tutoring services helped put an end to many student jobs which was too bad.

    Advice to Management

Management should see to it that advertising is given priority by those who actually know how to effectively advertise.
