I have been working at Oakland University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some really great people work here.

The retirement salary match of 16% for faculty is excellent.

The 3/2 teaching load for faculty in my program is reasonable.

Expectations for service and research are reasonable.

Tenure is attainable for faculty who do the work. Very few people turned down for tenure in tenure-track positions.

    Cons

The administration cut health benefits significantly, going from excellent coverage to an “outcomes based” discriminatory program that is not 100% covered. Some workers face higher copays and deductibles as a result.

The salaries are low compared to peer institutions, as was revealed in recent market-based increases.

The amount of money provided per year for travel support is woefully inadequate (about 1,000). The administration should recognize the importance of travel for faculty research and increase this support significantly.

    Advice to Management

Scrap the merit pay system. Nobody on the faculty likes it and the work put into it is wasted time for faculty and administrators.
