I worked at Oakley full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great employee discount, coworkers are typically very down to earth and easy to work with, benefits are pretty good. Three years ago I would have said upper management is a joy to work for, but they have all been sacked.

    Cons

This company is no longer Oakley. This is Luxottica. And Luxottica only succeeds by buying up the competition. The current state of the company isn't even recognizable to anyone who knows how the company was started or what drives its consumer. They have chased away the original core customer and have done nothing to attract new ones. It is obvious in the downward spiral in sales and in product quality. The soul has been dismantled and the remaining shell has absolutely no idea what it wants to be.

    Advice to Management

Figure out what made Oakley profitable. Before the Luxottica takeover Oakley was posting double digit profits. Lux's first priority was to move manufacturing to China and their other factories across the globe....to save money. And where has that gotten them? Sales are lower than they have ever been. The soul of Oakley resided in military, x games and people who were the opposite of mainstream. Perhaps you should turn the operations of the company to someone in the U.S. who understands that philosophy and take control away from Italians who are only interested in bottom line dollar. Profits>culture=failure.

I have been working at Oakley full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has many brand and company loyal employees. One that know the brand and product fully. While in its prime this was a company with a passion for creation.

    Cons

The parent company has taken a much stronger role in Oakley's operations and vision. What was once a company driven by brand and customer satisfaction is becoming just another sunglass company.

    Advice to Management

Learn what you can from those that are leaving. Review the past and what made Oakley great. Just selling units is not in line with quality.

I worked at Oakley full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Travel and some good people to work with.

    Cons

Leadership changes every 6 months, nothing consistent... Org chart is very complicated causing bad miss communication.

    Advice to Management

Needs structure, better communication, would help if a leader would step up and tell everybody the direction of the brand

    Pros

Products being designed at Oakley are truly the most premium and best performing items in the market. Incredible culture and brand history.

    Cons

High turnover, even at the executive level, and several rounds of layoffs damaged employee morale as the business continues to become streamlined underneath Luxxotica's corporate management.

    Advice to Management

Cultivate the creativity instead of merely following the sales figures and big box store orders. Let this brand get closer to it's roots- the California action sports lifestyle and premium innovation.

    Pros

My favorite perk is the deep discount on the glasses for employees and being able to drink here (at your lunch or through company events). The atmosphere is very casual but lacks professionalism at times. There are plenty of learning and training opportunities provided by the company but in limited stints. The company closes during the holidays but that is going to taken away shortly by Luxottica to be more aligned with their calendars. The holiday shutdown was great for employees with kids so we can align with the school shutdowns. Little be little Oakley is being erased and replaced with Luxottica. The quarterly team building events are great and it's in line with the culture and DNA of Oakley.

    Cons

One of the better benefits was having HMO and having it at a relatively low cost, but that is no longer the case as Luxottica is driving Oakley towards all PPO plan. This move comes in lieu of falling behind on sales and this is how they're going to compensate for it. On top of the PPO, if your spouse wants to be in your medical plan you'll have to pay an extra $100/month. During the hiring process and on the website, tank rides and athlete visits are listed as a perk but yet there hasn't been any announcement for it yet or how one can get a tank ride.

The biggest challenge/con is half of the team are Spanish speakers and the communication between those team members are in Spanish. This creates a barrier and the type of environment that they do not want to be friendly with you and rather talk in Spanish; this happens from the top down and needs to be addressed from upper management. Favoritism and more friendliness have been shown towards Spanish speakers. There has also been numerous layoffs within the company (not necessarily Supply Chain) and that is a big driver of morale being low. You don't know if you will get the notice next.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be more professionalism within the team since at the end of the day we are in a business environment and have our objectives to meet. The leadership needs to drive down the usage of Spanish within the team, starting with themselves. There should not be counterintuitive KPIs where the business is run in a way that do not allow us to accomplish them. Bring back HMO.

I have been working at Oakley full-time

    Pros

    Great discount with great products

    Cons

Upper management is completely unmotivating and doesn't pay you what you deserve. Simply being a cost cutting measure instead of rewarding your long time employees

    Advice to Management

Listen to your stores. Listen to customers and stop overthinking. You're doing everything backwards and hurting hard working people in the process.

    Pros

    You get a great discount

    Cons

Everything that doesnt have to do with the discount.

    Advice to Management

Obviously the switch to Lux has screwed over a lot of corporate employees, but the ones remaining need to get it together. Its almost comical to watch, but it is very clear (even to new hires) that this company has no idea what they’re doing.

I have been working at Oakley (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are the best reasons to be at Oakley, but all the good ones are leaving. Still a casual environment.

    Cons

Lux is just chopping the company up. People are leaving and there's a hiring freeze. Those of us who are left are picking up the slack with no additional pay. Work/life balance used to be great, now it's awful. The pay has always been below average, but the freedom and lifestyle made up for it. Now that that's all gone, there's no reason to stay for sub-par wages. I'm actively seeking employment elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Don't over work the employees who are left. Realize your employees' value and have them be in the position that best suits their contributions to the company, not just the holes that you have to fill from people leaving.
