I worked at Oakton Community College (More than a year)

    Pros

Working very flexible hours, making it convenient with your course schedule. Very laid back.

    Cons

Sometimes people will call Media Services for more specific technical related issues, which is another department that is responsible to handle. In that case you would just transfer them to the computer lab. Not many cons, this is great for students to work part-time on campus while being a full-time student.

I have been working at Oakton Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Faculty are passionate, and very interested in student success.
Tremendous range of programs and courses.
An excellent first college experience for everyone, very inclusive.

    Cons

One gets the feeling that the focus on excellence comes from the faculty... That's great, but there are many policies that suppress enrollment, which in turn suppress the pay which adjuncts can expect.

    Advice to Management

Get that enrollment up, make the website more on par with current student attraction practices, get high school students and local population to 'try a class' and show that Oakton is really delivering an excellent education for cents on the dollar. Advertise locally.

I have been working at Oakton Community College (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Love my job and coworkers are good friends. We work well together. Not true in every department. My position is part-time making it easier to avoid some of the 'politics' that happen with any work environment. Mostly enjoy meeting the students, encouraging them and seeing them achieve their academic goals. Very satisfying. The new president is great.

    Cons

Cafe is too expensive. Lack of state funding making it difficult to hire people so everyone doing more work. Management into data collection; almost takes away from focus of education. Department and room signs are poorly done. Community gets lost and confused.

    Advice to Management

Improve signage. White arrow on yellow background hard to see. Nothing at ALLIANCE says its ESL. Several times, while walking the main hallway, I've redirected people away from Enrollment Center to ESL office. They had been misdirected and were angry and confused. All the windows in the Lee Center are aesthetic but not functional or safe.
