I worked at Occidental Petroleum full-time

    Pros

Good benefits. Interesting process. Relevant to field of study.

    Cons

Management does not address concerns in a timely manner and instead blindsides you at your review, and also accepts unprofessional behavior from superiors that includes being extremely insulting, showing favoritism towards certain other employees, and making reference to skin tone.

    Advice to Management

Follow your own protocol and address employee concerns right away. Also, hold superiors accountable when they are unprofessional and create a hostile environment.

I worked at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Oxy offers an attractive benefits package.

    Cons

CEO is determined to break-apart & sell company assets piecemeal to preserve the divid. Nobody's job is safe.

Management is busy enriching themselves at expense of the line-workers.

Company is top-heavy with directors and VPs. Too many chiefs; not enough indians.

Don't trust what management says; watch what they do.

Morale among rank-and-file is low and getting worse.

    Advice to Management

    Resign. Leave.

    Pros

Nothing comes to mind as being positive.

    Cons

Worst place to work for. Poor outlook and decision making by the CEO and Sr. Managers. One of the companies that does not have degreed managers. HR is weak and Recruitment cannot find employees.

    Advice to Management

Shape up and get a degree. Nobody will come work for you.

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time

    Pros

9/80 and my co-workers. Outside of that, absolutely nothing.

    Cons

Low pay, hr is clueless, Management is clueless, No upward movement unless you have a sponsor. The Facilities group is in total chaos. Managers are bullies and running good people off. Look at the reviews... the only people leaving high reviews are people who recently joined the company < 1 year. Constant organization to accomplish nothing. Know people who have been laid off.

    Advice to Management

Sell it to a major. The current management has no clue. Let your employees do other roles. Stop holding them in same role to rot.

I worked at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some locations offer good experience in the field.
    9/80 work schedule.

    Cons

Significant management issues when treating some people with dignity and respect. Work environment will be used to persecute some people with no accountability. Double standards within the company with regards to accountability. Limited locations for work and projects. High rate of hiring and layoffs without any planning for future oil and gas cycles. Management and HR hold very little in the way of ethics. Fluctuating pay that is rarely competitive with other companies.

    Advice to Management

Take a page from the oil and gas companies that are currently setting benchmarks for employee relations. They are blazing the trail while Oxy is headed in the other direction.

I worked at Occidental Petroleum as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The only pro was location. It was not a long drive for me. I did not have trouble with work-life balance, since I never worked overtime. In my position, I did not do any traveling. They had a cafeteria which was convenient, and free parking.

    Cons

Temps and contractors were often fired on a mere whim of their supervisor. This lowers employee morale. Co-workers were not supportive of each other and there was a very snobbish work environment. I worked in the international department. If you choose to work here as a temp or contractor, beware. If you work in the international department, be aware that some do not like Americans. There was an anti-American prejudice in this department and it was very noticeable at times.

    Advice to Management

Would anyone care? I would give advice but I don't think it would matter.

I worked at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work life balance only - 9-80 schedule.

    Cons

Childish, bigoted work environment. Mediocre salaries and compensations packages. Ineffective, generic performance reviews and none existent training/development. No work ethic, accountability, responsibility or prospects for advancement. Company downsizing due to poor reputation and inability to hold on to professional staff. Petty middle management, prejudice HR policies and victimization of certain people. Extremely limited working locations and poorly managed assets.

    Advice to Management

Fresh leadership with a professional background is needed to totally reinvent the company and start over. Don't be cowards when dealing with bigoted employees as this promotes Oxys already shameful reputation within oil and gas.

    Pros

The pay is okay and the location is decent.

    Cons

Reorganizations occur every 6 months. Training is lacking. Management is horrible. It is a very hostile working environment for minorities. All that I can say is politics, politics, politics.

    Advice to Management

    Be fair
