I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benifits, bonus , medical are top 10% in industry.
Flexibility with work schedule is good, PTO is good. Great first line managers for the most part.

    Cons

To many layers of management, disconnect with a Houston and surface Operations, there are some serious politics within Houston, IT is driving way to many decisions for the company, Project RIO is a joke and ran by individuals that do not have a clue as to how to advance technology to be profitable for OXY. RIO seems to be worried more about the image rather than the actual project results and deliverables.

    Advice to Management

Remember that producing oil and gas is what makes the company money, and what keeps the shareholders happy. There needs to be some serious work over and restructuring done to the IT/RIO group, they think OXY is an IT company that just happens to make a little oil and gas. Operations should Help drive technology needs, IT should not be making those decisions all the time, they have no idea what ROI is.

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible and pretty relaxed work environment. Decent benefits and good company to learn and gain experience.

    Cons

Office building is in the middle of Houston so you have to fight traffic no matter what direction you are coming from. Doesn't have much international operations or other USA exposure other than the Permian Basin.

    Advice to Management

Promote more based on actual knowledge, experience and performance rather than personal relationships.

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

9/80 schedule (I.e. Pick your own schedule; 6-3,8-5,9-6,etc..), family friendly, great benefits, quality of work/life distribution was satisfactory. Getting to network with other oil and gas companies.

    Cons

Self centered egotistical personnel that only looked out for themselves the majority of the time. Teach yourself anything you may need to know. Ask tons of questions because they won't tell you what your working on in detail.

    Advice to Management

Adhere to the open door policy and allow new ideas to be heard and explored when they cost 0.00$ to the company.

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Early schedule available, 9/80 option, good benefits, company match 401k, good work environment, business casual, opportunity for company rotation after 3 yrs

    Cons

Lose 9/80 Friday during close, oil prices are low so raises/promotions are slow in 2016 (none in 2015), low bonus payout in 2015/2016

I worked at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people at the worker bee level

    Cons

Levels of Sr Management that provide nothing, have made terrible decisions or been responsible for those decisions, terrible hires and are still here collecting a over inflated check while people that actually do work and make lower than the standard salaries are let go. This guy was flying the wrong flag for the guy who robbed oxy before he left after he didnt get the ceo job. (Nice hire chazen! ) New CEO and new high level midstream mgmt is atleast attempting to get to know the people that do the work but mgmt that has been around a while and one that was a chazen guy are still around while bringing nothing to the table. You want to cut costs, you get rid of guys like that ASAP. The morale would improve immediately, everyday he is still around you know the place still has issues.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of overpaid mgmt that only care about fancy cars.

    Pros

learned a lot. no micromanagement. left alone and trusted to get what needed to be done done.

    Cons

started at $14/hour for training and never moved up as promised. had to submit my resignation to get a decent $27. after 5 years, was never offered a position with the actual company...(salary, bonuses, retirement). so, i left.

I worked at Occidental Petroleum full-time

    Pros

You gain exposure to a variety of different technologies. Great people working as a team on major projects.

    Cons

Occasional re-organization causes chaos, takes a while to stabilize, I had 3 bosses and two different directors in a 8 month period. Poor secession planning in IT.

    Advice to Management

Could use some improvement in secession planning based on skills and abilities and not just personality. Provide a career path for your best technical resources.
