I worked at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The work was fairly easy and relatively straight forward to automate. Fellow coworkers were friendly and easy to get along with.

    Cons

The company systems are a mess. One system did not talk to another resulting in a lot of extra work.

Very good matching 401k plan, about 6% plus retirement benefits

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Monday through Thursday work week, ten hour shift with occasional overtime , three day weekends, three weeks vacation, great benefits

    Cons

Not the biggest fan of call outs but it's extra money. Some plants have a rotation schedule, others are just first one to answer

I worked at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

When Oxy spun off the California operations and moved the headquarters to Houston, management was fair in its treatment of the employees staying in California. They gave most of us the opportunity to either move to Houston or stay in California.

    Cons

The last couple years the headquarters was in Los Angeles, the offices were getting run down. They didn't fix many of the problems since they knew they were moving everyone to Houston.

I worked at Occidental Petroleum as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, good people and good work environment. You can learn a lot at the company and very stable environment in general.

    Cons

Only problem i saw there was the management are stuck in a rut in their thinking in regards to their people, Requiring a bachelors degree for full time permanent employment no matter what, They will hire contractors without that but will not consider those contractors for permanent employment no matter how long they have been at the company without bachelors degrees, you don't even need one for your field..just any bachelors. That is thinking that should change.

    Advice to Management

My only advice would be to change the attitude in regards to the bachelors degrees, if you have contractors that you keep around because they do work well at your company, then you need to adapt your way of thinking in regards to requirements to make them permanent employees.

I have been working at Occidental Petroleum full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people, reasonable work schedule, and average pay. Given lots of responsibility and exposure to several diverse types of projects.

    Cons

Not very much room for career growth, and career guidance is none existent. The HR department is not there in support of the employee but for the management exclusively.

    Advice to Management

Not a logical path for promoting from within
