    Pros

Benefits were really good, vacation and sick time were really generous, there is the possibity of advancement.

    Cons

Raises are virtually non existent, the unions are useless, mismanegement that cared more for results than the employees doing it.

I worked at Ocean County College full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

ONLY the benefits and absolutely nothing else!

    Cons

Management is horrendous...don't care about employees or students...classes are strictly to make money, not to have students actually learn...morale is the worst I have ever seen among employees...they only stay because the benefits are better than most but as soon as they get another job they are gone. The president is strictly a figurehead and the VP of Finance is the one who really runs the show. So many safety... issues and problems that are just covered with band aids. As long as you kiss butt you are fine...the second you stand up for anything you are gone!!! HR department is a joke, they truly do not care about the employees in any way possible.

I have been working at Ocean County College full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Excellent Benefits & Awesome Students

    Cons

Staff could use in depth training on how to use active listening skills. Being more patient with the students and being there for their needs. After all, the students are why they have a job. Customer service is lacking immensely. They should have secret students for observations.

    Advice to Management

    Work in the above.

I have been working at Ocean County College full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    1. NOT an adjunct 2. Good benefits 3. Job security - although, not tenured 4. You don't have to worry about "publishing or perishing"

    Cons

If you're reading this, you probably have an interview for a lecturer position or work at the college. Keep in mind that this is NOT the holy grail of full-time academic positions. Why? 1. You work year round. This includes during the summer break, winter break, and spring break where you do administrative work. Yes, you are given off major holidays and have vacation time (3 weeks), but this isn't a typical TT... position. Heck, even high school teachers have summers off. 2. The schedule for this position is Monday-Friday from 8 until 4pm or 9 until 5pm year round. When you're not completing teaching tasks, you are doing admin work in your shared office. 3. Admin work can range from truly fulfilling to the depressingly mundane. It's usually somewhere in the middle. 4. This job is a pawn between the Board and the tenured faculty (FAOCC - google it). They don't like each other much. 5. If you are a newly-minted PhD and have aspirations of research, this may not be the job for you. It's time consuming, so good luck trying to write that book or conduct that experiment. Think long term for your career. 6. Morale isn't great. As much as people desperately want to leave Adjunct Nation, it's not common for a lecturer to last more than 5 years. 7. Yes, the salary is pretty good to start. But that's basically it forever with minimal increases year to year. There is no tenure or opportunity to become an "Associate Lecturer" or something like that. 8. I get the sense that if you do your job, you will have your contract renewed every year. However, no tenure means they can rid of you at any point for any reason.

I have been working at Ocean County College part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great teamwork within department, active work, reasonable flexibility for part time positions, great benefits when full-time, and potential for career opportunities within.

    Cons

Occasionally difficult getting certain issues proactively addressed and resolved by upper management.

I have been working at Ocean County College full-time

    Pros

Great benefits package. Other than that, there is no reason to stay.

    Cons

Horrifying HR department. They ignore complaints unless threatened by lawyers. There is no attention to sexual harassment complaints, discrimination, or mistreatment by vicious employees.

    Advice to Management

Fire all upper management and start over. The corruption is destructive to the student experience.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Ocean County College part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    - pays more than some community colleges - some people I've met are nice. - a select group of students really care and make it kinda worth it - freedom to teach

    Cons

    - minuscule room for career or salary growth, no benefits whatsoever. The secretary and the janitor makes more than someone with a graduate degree. - work varies every single semester - many students don't want to be there at all - mandatory meetings and administrative tasks have been added to the job - full-time faculty steals classes (and hence, money) from adjuncts - online courses are a complete joke and a... money-making scheme

    Advice to Management

Morale is so low about adjuncts that it transfers to their teaching, which transfers to the students, who then question why they're wasting their time and money here. Enrollment will lower and I would not be shocked if the school faces a financial crisis or goes completely online.
