I worked at Ocean Tomo full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Management is well connected within the patent & IP industry allowing for great opportunities with great clients. The Company is well known within Big Law and C-Suites. Personal development is driven by an individual's ambition and desire to advance.

    Cons

Reasonably decent pay through Associate/Director level, but bonus program is limited and there is virtually zero chance of becoming an equity partner. Therefore, most of the best senior talent leaves in short order.

Management has a very onerous non-compete at the Director level and up.

    Advice to Management

Do more to keep your talent by sharing the upside in cash or equity.

I worked at Ocean Tomo (More than a year)

    Pros

None - awful place to work

    Cons

Too many to mention but cliquish, secretive; bucket loads of management hubris; management blindspots; trivial place to work

    Advice to Management

    Look in the mirror

    Pros

The company has several nice, intelligent, hard-working employees. Work product is thorough and accurate. The company encourages a very innovative culture.

    Cons

The hours can be demanding, as some projects can require late nights and weekends. The company has a very small, familial culture and some employees have not enjoyed similar successes and/or opportunities as those who have been around longer.

    Advice to Management

    None.

    Pros

Relatively diverse workforce. Interesting ideas. Nice offices.

    Cons

Too many ideas--no execution. Very political environment, stay away if you are not related to or know someone very well in the firm. Entire view of the management is on creating valuable IP (they have several patents and many pending) not business value--marketing, sales, and operations are not priorities.

    Advice to Management

Split up the firm into services, products, auction, and investments. Too many conflicts of interest
