I worked at Odell Simms & Associates (More than 3 years)

    Pros

OSL listens to their employees and tries to make it a win win environment. They truly value their employees and treat them as family.

    Cons

At the time of my employment, there was no potential for growth.

    Pros

The people who work here (not upper management) are nice enough. The coffee machine (that doesn't belong to them) is also a nice plus.

    Cons

Everything. Pay is terrible, work is terrible. Very boring work and very low pay. The location is super far away from D.C. Upper management treats everyone like they are useless and interchangeable (confuses names or doesn't even know your name - in a company with 10 employees). Recently laid off half the staff and didn't even manage to do it professionally. A shame of a company.

    Advice to Management

    Just close down shop.

I worked at Odell Simms & Associates full-time

    Pros

OSL provided me the opportunity to explore various career paths and ultimately point me in the right direction. It is a small company where you able to interact and learn directly from upper management. The management team taught me to take chances, don't take no for answer, and stand up for what you believe in. The company has a ton of connections within the DMV and were even helpful in finding my next job.

    Cons

There was not much growth potential but that can be said with any small company.

I have been working at Odell Simms & Associates full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you require a lot of oversight, handholding, and training, then OSL is not the place for you. However, if you are smart, savvy, versatile, and ambitious, then OSL can provide you with a breadth of opportunities to advance your career. OSL is known for its rolodex and connections with C-Suite Executives and high net-worth individuals, providing its employees and clients with the opportunity to build relationships with influential leaders across the country. The work is very interesting and, given that it’s a consulting firm, you get to work with a wide-variety of clients. Additionally, OSL has an entrepreneurial atmosphere, encouraging its employees to go beyond the traditional fundraising practices, tap into their own talent, and bring new ideas to the table. All in all, OSL is a great place for people who take initiative, work hard, and are passionate about fundraising.

    Cons

OSL does not provide much growth opportunities beyond the role of an Account Manager; however due to recent internal changes, the company is looking to revamp its structure to provide more upward mobility.

I worked at Odell Simms & Associates full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked there for four years and found it to be an incredible springboard for my career. If the executive team trusts in your abilities, you will have a ton of responsibility and independence. The work is interesting and you get to work on behalf of nonprofits without the nonprofit culture.

    Cons

The culture is pretty conservative - read two older men run the show. The company is generally pretty dated in their model. Growth opportunities are very limited. There is very little training or mentoring, unless you get an executive's attention.

    Advice to Management

Promote the amazing young women you hire to be managers and leaders. Invest in outside trainings. Evolve your business model a bit to keep up with the times.
