I worked at Office Depot full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy enough job to get if you can't find anything else and need money badly enough.

They like to promote from within rather than hire management from outside the company.

    Cons

Commission on Protection Plans and Tech Services was reduced to 5% in 2015 or so, leaving very little incentive for associates and tech staff to upsell on services and plans. Previously it would begin at 5% and increase to 10% or 15% based on the district's overall performance.

Zero time allowed for training. You'll click through mind-numbing videos and quizzes on them for a day or two and then be thrown to the wolves. You will retain none of it. There is no practical, hands-on training. I was never allowed adequate time to train my tech associates and so had no one to back me up on repairs and service sales.

Little to no flexibility in scheduling for full-timers.

Corporate punishes poor sales numbers by reducing available payroll, hamstringing associates' and senior sales consultants' efforts.

Management staff clocks in early and stays late, resulting in cut hours and essentially stealing pay from full- and part-time associates.

Lack of available payroll means you will be expected to do the job of three or more people between your regular selling duties, pc repairs (for technicians), setting planograms, picking online and ship orders, and cleaning the store before closing every night. More often than not you'll be forced to choose between trying to make sales goals and keeping the store from looking like a train wreck.

    Advice to Management

Treat your associates well and they'll carry the company faster than corporate will. Pay a fair, living wage and treat your associates like human beings rather than machines that make money for your bosses.

I worked at Office Depot (More than a year)

    Pros

There really isn't any benefit to working here.

    Cons

Toxic work environment, low pay, lack of leadership and nepotism. Felt like High School rather than a business establishment.

    Advice to Management

Pay people better and don't make them feel like pawns.

I worked at Office Depot full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

People you work with are all fantastic

    Cons

Poor pay. Long hours and senior directors are on you all day long. Anyone with tenure ...they find a way to get rid of you. They never act professionally and treat management employees so poorly you want to leave. I am a professional with a lot of experience and skills. Management are mostly a bunch of kids that want to get ahead and will stab you in the back every chance they get. If you want some experience ....just stay 2 years and then leave. Don't go there unless you really need a job. With the mergers' they are going down hill

    Advice to Management

Look at directors and senior directors. They treat their employees like dirt.

I worked at Office Depot full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The best part about working at this job was the people. I mean my coworkers. The pay is good, considering all of the constraints that are always being placed on you.

    Cons

The managers tell you that the sky is the limit. What is NOT mentioned is that this place is microcosm of corporate america. Ergo if you don't look like the rest of the "typical" corporate structure, you will not be promoted. Bonus structure is highly questionable- ie it changes during the quarter that you are supposed to be paid out. If you and your spouse work here, only 1 of your will receive a bonus during a quarter. I mean even if you see that you have a bonus, it will mysteriously be gone during payout period.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to sell everyone you "OD" kool-aide, that stuff is poison. When there is a new implementation of a new policy, stick to it.

I worked at Office Depot part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Doors didn't close while I was still employed.

    Cons

Pitiful management (micromanagement, too "busy" to lend a hand, claimed busy times were for "navigating" employees rather than pitch in, cut payroll back to the bone then stressed over longer waits, pay is unbelievably poor, no benefits, stores are filthy and disgusting, restrooms look like a science project, 90% of store is overpriced junk, service plans/warranties are a waste of money, management does not trust employees, no incentive for exceeding expectations, senior management is out of touch with daily operations, high turn over rate directly reflected on lousy pay, management has no respect for associates, management believes the title 'manager' deserves respect and recognition without merit, attendance policy cannot be adhered to because of high turnover. Bottom line: OFFICE DEPOT TREATS EMPLOYEES LIKE TRASH AND GOING OUT OF BUSINESS AS A RESULT.

    Advice to Management

Close the doors - you guys blew it. Training modules are a joke, did not listen or appreciate associates, clueless managers are essentially just a figure head to take blame for incidents, senior management out of touch with reality, impossible to meet goals and objectives without incentives for associates, stores are filthy and depressing, technology is overpriced, associates are fed up with lousy treatment and do not care, labor laws are tossed to the wind by withholding breaks and allowing/forcing working off the clock

I have been working at Office Depot part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Assistant manager was extremely cool along with other staff... honestly that is it

I'm just forced to type in 20 words

    Cons

Office Depot has a really big problem in human resources, which trickles down to the mouths at the bottom of the food chain. I've seen way too much, to the point where I could easily start a massive lawsuit. From almost all forms of harassment to little things, like fixing Schedules at any moment and not informing employees. I could go on about how backwards this company is but I would seem like a mad man.

    In all office depot is:
    Corrupted
     Boring
Extremely hard to defend to customers
Will feed of you low wage and hard work
    Racist??? (We never know)
    Cheap
    ...etc

    Advice to Management

At least if you are going to bull talk your staff, at least be good at it! Also appreciate your staff and see them work with no issues. Oh and Don't cut hours from a consistent 24+hours a week to 8 hours without a heads up, esspesialy if he is one of your only best sellers. Thank you for not caring!

I worked at Office Depot full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You are daily involved in building and maintaining relationships. (Internally and Externally) The drive and focus to take care of customers.

A Lot of material given to use as tools to service customers,
(Con:)but you are not given the time to use it..

    Cons

The work load is plenty as it relates to task with short windows and time frame to get it done. The payroll given to operate a business as this is not competitive or even conducive to a fair days work of expectation. The good people that are working and really doing there best in service and sales have to take on 4-5 different roles in a day because of the constant turnover and sometimes lack of time to train people when they become a new hire.
Raises are poor year after year, no matter how hard or efficient you work.
As a human being, you really don't enjoy the rewards of working or servicing people because you are constantly trying to complete tasks.
    No work life- balance.

    Advice to Management

Be human beings in business, and not just human doings.
Any success begins with building relationships. (You don't have to be buddies, to be beings!) The customer is your business, but the people who work for you are too!
Take some time to reflect on your day and how you can empower yourself to treat people better than you perhaps have done. You will be rewarded greatly in many other ways, if you practice doing this as a joy- not a job!
Treat people with respect and dignity no matter how much corporate or business pressure may come to you.

    Pros

Nothing comes to mind. Discount on pens? It's making me write more but I don't have anything really good to say. I guess I got some decent experience.

    Cons

Giving away money to horrible customers who don't deserve special treatment. Low pay, work every holiday, etc. Retail brings out the worst in people.

I worked at Office Depot full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible Schedule for the most part. Good Paid Time Off Hours. Fun coworkers that share same values and have same goals.

    Cons

The company is poorly ran from the top in corporate. The biggest disappointment is the lack of career advancement due to lack of resources in training, development, and not enough individual work. The payroll structure made for inconsistent hours and pay. They try to sell you it's a performance/commission based company but that is not true.

    Advice to Management

Don't create a politics culture it's a losing formula for the business. Be more willing to get to know your employees better and lead with consistency and not favoritism. There's also better ways of motivating people than constantly saying what the expectations are. Show them how to reach the expectations.
