I have been working at Office for National Statistics part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Being employed as a Field Interviewer since Sept 2016, i have enjoyed the family friendly working arrangements. I enjoy the variety of the job, and overall I have been impressed with the leadership of the Field Manager and feel valued and well supported.

    Cons

The hrs can be rather unsociable at times, working till late in the evening sometimes.

I worked at Office for National Statistics full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The atmosphere was great as an economist. You will have your ideas listened to, and have the opportunity to play around with lots of interesting data. If you are a numbers geek, the job is fantastic. Lots of focus on developing awareness of economics and current events also. I was able to travel to for lots of really interesting training events and conferences.

    Cons

Not everyone will be happy with having to move to Newport, although there are nice places in the area. You could earn more in the private sector.

    Advice to Management

Keep the culture of "curiosity", and the focus on developing staff. Keep the opportunities for discussing economic policy and events.

It would be to your advantage to make sure you involve staff at every grade in all major decision making.

I have been working at Office for National Statistics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A clear drive to lead the world in cutting edge data and analysis. Provides employees plenty of chances to engage in interesting projects.

    Cons

Harder to get to than other offices due to location and stronger leadership and messages from the top are sometimes needed.

    Advice to Management

Develop /modernise onsite facilities and keep using interesting /stimulating secondments to give employees a good taste of working in both the bigger cities and academia.

I worked at Office for National Statistics as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

This particular role actually meant spending a good deal of time outside, which was great. Other staff very competent and friendly.

    Cons

Occasionally some members of the public did refuse to be interviewed, which was unhelpful and slightly awkward. A few colleagues encountered some quite rude people, although this was quite rare and I personally didn't experience this.

    Advice to Management

Possibly the pay could be improved, aside from that a nice job, particularly for students or those with other commitments.

I have been working at Office for National Statistics as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very interesting work! Hands on work, directly affecting policy, very rewarding to work somewhere that is so important. Plenty of opportunities for training and development. They encourage movement within the organisation and within Civil Service (not really applicable to me as a sandwich student).

    Cons

The nature of the work (regular publications) means that it can get slightly repetitive, and sometimes there can be periods of time where there is little work to do.

    Advice to Management

Liaise with HR and contact new employees and give them information about their future role in due time!
