I have been working at OfficeMax full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you like being a working manager, then this is the position for you. It matches my style and preferences but the payoff is hard to see.

    Cons

The company feels like it is in a downward spiral with the known store closings, recent change in CEOs, and how we are rolling out new programs and revamping old ones. It smells of a strategy of throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. I am. It very confident in the long term viability of the company.

    Advice to Management

Slow down and get back to basics. You are putting too many low-payoff, high-stress, non-sensical programs and policies in place. Managers, especially in the lower volume store's have no time left to manage. They're just running from one chore to another and the next thing you know your 12-13 hour shift is coming to a close and you wonder what you really achieved.

I have been working at OfficeMax full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

With every protection plans sold, there are incentives that goes to your paycheck.

Store employees were able to recover from poor management prior when I first started here. Now, as a team, were are now a strong performing store in regards to customer interactions and sales. Our neighborhood have modest to positive reviews about us.

Training was a bit rubbish but was able to pick it up through trial and error as well as customer interactions. Management DOES help you training you to become a better sales associate.

    Benefits are a plus too!

    Cons

Store presentation: it needs to be more interesting with more technology. True, all stores vary by location but it helps bring interests to customers.

POOR marketing team: when was the last time you saw an Office Depot commercial or use social media outlets to expand their brand recognition?

    The name!

To the CEO: Re-brand the company as Office Depot. As that so hard? Even our prices don't match. This should have been merged back years ago!!

    Advice to Management

None. I'm proud of my management team and staff. :)

I have been working at OfficeMax full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Store Managers are given a fairly large amount of management control with a minimal amount of micromanagement. If your store is being run effectively managers tend to bonus at a Quarterly rate. In addition to the bonus structure managers are not pushed to work 50+ hours if you are able to handle the workload and KPI expectations.

    Cons

With falling retail sales the company is showing obvious cut backs in a large amount of support areas including large cuts in stores payroll dollars. With the amount of work to be completed this is making the completion of day to day operations and customer service very difficult to balance.

I have been working at OfficeMax full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good Work/Life balance.(until you get laid off)

    Cons

No growth opportunities. Waiting to get laid off. Office Depot bought a strong company, albeit number three, with a solid balance sheet, and ruined it.

    Advice to Management

Stop changing leadership every three years. Find a way to provide some stability to the company. You do nothing for morale, when the associates see the current CEO getting millions to leave and the new CEO getting millions to come on board, all while the people who actually do the work are getting laid off.
