I have been working at OfficeMax part-time

    Pros

Officemax provides a very low barrier to entry for possible employees, and
my interactions with senior staff were neither frequent nor unpleasant.
My store personally had a fantastic staff that I enjoy working with.

    Cons

Bottom lines are difficult to hit, especially for smaller stores. The company is primarily geared to a market ultimately better served by online retailers, and
poor marketing means that low performing stores can easily stagnate.

Hours are not consistent Part-time hours are very limited and full time positions are scarce. In-company promotions are infrequent depending on the store. Wages are comparatively low for retail.

    Advice to Management

A refocusing and stronger emphasis on career advancement within the company would go a long way to improve employee morale. Consistent hours for part time employees as well as better compensation would be ideal. The constant emphasis on add-on sales stifles customer service and employee autonomy.

I'd recommend a candid, sit down talk with upper staff on making the company more focused on internal scouting rather than hiring from outside of the company.
In short, give people incentive to be better and they will be.

    I worked at OfficeMax full-time

    Pros

Ability to learn and lead on the floor

    Cons

retail hours, benefits minimal, no say in hiring or firing decisions.

    Advice to Management

If the Ops Manager is going to be a manager of people, then allow to be part of the hiring process. Forget the politics and fire the kids who cannot show up to work on time. Track it consistently and enforce policies.
Evaluate Ops manager salary compared to ASM and SM salaries. Pretty sure the store manager did not do 2.5 times as much work.

    Pros

    Cons

The pay is low for the responsibilities I have. No consistency with upper management. Help desk is in a foreign country with broken English and heavy accents

    Advice to Management

Pay your management more. $10/For an associate and $12-13 For a manager is not right

I worked at OfficeMax (More than a year)

    Pros

    Some graphic art work
    Good first-time customer service experience
Met plenty of business owners from one day to the next
With the exception of the store managers, co-workers were all pretty easy to work with.

    Cons

    Equipment regularly malfunctions
Regularly understaffed for the sheer volume of orders and customers
Virtually no actual training or explanation of company policy
Customers will regularly try to get you to illegally alter or otherwise forge documents. Not a huge issue if you know what to watch out for.
