I have been working at OfficeMax part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

While the discount is only %10 (20% on food items), the insider knowledge on when things are about to go on sale as well as when they go on clearance is awesome. Also OfficeDepot/OfficeMax website can be a little confusing and having employee knowledge about how to find the best deal has saved me tons, especially on my new laptop. So while the initial discount isnt huge, everything else you gain from working for Officedepot really is worth it.

Also the company does a great job at making the actual processes easy to use, understand, and excel at. They just instituted a way to do Fill Reports (stocking) with the scanner instead of having to type in every individual item number, which saves me a whole hour every morning.

    Cons

Being sales is kind of high pressure with all the scripts and sales pitches you have to throw out, while also being friendly and dealing with many customers that just want to buy their stuff and to leave. And I'm not sure about other stores but dealing with elderly customers who would honestly be better off going to Wal-Mart is a huge pain. They dont understand many of the services and offers and tend to be angry simply because they are confused at everything in the store. Also the way they push for rewards sign ups is very skewed. I usually average %70 rewards transactions but that never gets noticed especially if I only get 1-3 sign ups in a week, when I'm Logistics and only checkout maybe a handful of customers a day. Also the surveys are almost always about "out of stock on this", or "didnt have what I wanted".... and we get criticized for bad scores when if customers would just USE THE WEBSITE, they could find all their wants and needs, order for pick up or delivery (ship from store next day delivery wake up people), But nah, we get old timers who dont even have emails so cant sign up for rewards.

    Advice to Management

Focus on percentages not base numbers, comparing what we did based on customer flow and current sales is much more likely to raise morale than complaining about how we did more in sales last year. Odds are the reason for that is weather, sales, and economy temperament rather than our performance on that day.
