I worked at OfficeMax part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I've met my greatest of friends with this job, and the work prepares you in everything retail as well as tech and print services. The leadership was great at my store in cedar park and my store was always at the top in district sales.

    Cons

Corporate does stiff that makes people on the internet complain and make fun of them about it. Also, some customers will make you want to re-evaluate your life.

plus business is dead in the summer

    Advice to Management

At my store? Keep it up. At other stores? Treat your employees better.

I have been working at OfficeMax part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    1. Smartphone repair (a hobby of mine)
    2. When promoted or moved to the tech area, you get to learn a lot about customers.
    3. Challenging environment.
    4. 30 Minute breaks.
    5. Hourly pay plus commission for regular and new items.

    Cons

    1. Frustrated management.
    2. Stressed staff from employee promises (without being checked first).
    3. Very low amount of staff.
    4. EVERY part time employee has to clean restrooms (no assigned days; whoever is not liked the most or steps in does it. UNTIL recently where the cashier of the night has to clean restrooms) But no janitor cleans them?
    5. When someone calls out and you are stuck at the register, YOU are the one responsible for not making any tech services. Even though, you are not allowed to leave the register and you ask for yourself to "ring out the sale," whoever is on the floor gets to STEAL the sale.
    6. Associates are in charge of making sure they get breaks. Even though management gets to decide when they go?
    7. LOTS of incidents where associates take another associate's sales (not counting the Walk-In sales).
    8. You cannot change your availability yourself.
    9. You cannot see your schedule until 4 days before the week starts, PLUS the app to see your schedule does not work.

    Advice to Management

Treat associates with more respect. If someone is not doing their job or needs assistance, then they should be communicated with. If a customer is being harassed or yelled at by an employee, even management; it should be taken seriously when an employee addresses and sees the situation. Plus, find better ways to help everyone get along in a TEAM like environment: everyone is on the same side but still advance.

I worked at OfficeMax full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with, most of the time. Management was good, off and on, depending on the personality and abilities of the management in question. Customers were mostly awesome, at least at the locations I worked for.

    Cons

Working the holidays was the hardest. Setting up store in the middle of the night on thanksgiving for black Friday. Especially, when it used to be going in at 5 a.m. on Friday. As well as, no holiday pay for black Friday.

    Advice to Management

Stop the forcing people to work overnights on thanksgiving and early a.m at regular pay on black Friday. The lost family time really hurts morale at what I perceive to be minimal financial gain for company.

    Pros

Co-workers are pretty cool, but generally snobby highschoolers. Pay is decent depending on position

    Cons

Management doesn't give a damn about it's employees, the company as a whole doesn't recognize employees.

    I worked at OfficeMax part-time

    Pros

very easy, a great starting job.

    Cons

not many people shop here year-round, so I do not think OfficeMax will keep employing as many people.

    Advice to Management

I worked at OfficeMax (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great place to work overall, I was with the company for 16 years and held multiple positions. The opportunity to grow was always present and I found management to be accommodating and fair.

    Cons

Sometimes the company can be little "Old School" in it's way of doing things. In same cases holding on to processes and or mentalities simply because that's the way it's always been.

Many people lost their jobs due to a merger with OfficeDepot.

    Advice to Management

Quite cutting payroll at the last minute and stay consistent with how to measure key categories.

    Pros

Commision for Protection Plans and tech services

    Cons

Managment is lazy. Corporate overcomplicates processes. Way too little payroll to allow you to actually do your job.

    Advice to Management

    Add more payroll
