I worked at OfficeMax part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was in school at the time and my manager was very flexible with hours. Once you learn the ropes, the job is not difficult. Incentives to sign people up for rewards and to sell warrantees were attractive.

    Cons

One complaint I would have would be that since everything else is digitized, I'd love to have a calendar that I can access outside of work rather than have to walk in and look at the physical copy.

    Advice to Management

Un-announced drop-ins from higher-ups are stressful and distract us from our job, which is to sell your products and take care of customers. A little heads-up, even just a few hours, would make everything so much better.

I have been working at OfficeMax full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Being that it is retail, there is a lot of interaction with people
    - Moving around all day - not sitting behind a desk
    - Your main end game is getting sales but everyday can bring something different to accomplish
    - Schedule changes every week, which makes it easier to request a weekday off if need be
    - You work with some good, hard working people

    Cons

    - But since it is retail you also end up working with a lot of lazy people or people who are late, etc.
    - You deal with rude or angry customers or customers who get upset over something you have no control over
    - Corporate makes frequent questionable decisions

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees, they are your number 1 asset. There are many times we feel like an afterthought. (Note: most of my qualms have come prior to the new CEO being hired).

I have been working at OfficeMax full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

AC in building is about the only pro.

    Cons

Talk down to, Pay is horrible for amount of work. Need 100s of things done but tell you there is no payroll so you cant work and if it doesnt get done they ask why didnt this get done.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the hard workers and the ones who go the extra step to make your job easier. We don't make anything close to you yet we do more

I have been working at OfficeMax part-time

    Pros

I like OfficeMax, it all depends on your managers, supervisors and associates. If everyone works together and doesn't have a snazzy attitude we will work.

    Cons

Though there are a few things that do annoy me with the company. There are a few things that needs to be changed in the system.

I worked at OfficeMax part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked here while in college and my managers and supervisors were amazing at making sure I got at least 18 to 24 hours a week while working with my ever changing school schedule. They were also understanding about me needing to take off from work during school breaks to travel home.

Employees are trained in all departments.

Coworkers were like a second family.

    Cons

Working in retail when you're part time and in school means working most weekend and holidays, Thanksgiving was the worst, though management will work with you occasionally.

    I worked at OfficeMax full-time

    Pros

Obviously varies from store to store, but I was at 3 stores in my time there and loved the culture at every one of them. They're weirdos but they're your weirdos. I made lasting friendships that I've kept even after leaving. If you work with Tech at all there's some potential to make mad commission. Every store I've been to they're more likely to promote from within rather than bring in outside applicants.

    Cons

Corporate culture at anything above store level is very different than store culture. They work together somehow, but there's a reason you see only very specific personality types at management levels or higher. It's not friendly to anyone not having that personality type, and they will not hesitate to throw you under the bus.

    Advice to Management

Lighten up, you're one of the number one Office Supply retailers in the world, you could afford to be kinder to your employees.
