It pays the bills. Access to decent pension, training and other civil service jobs.

    Cons

    Culture. Culture. Culture. Weak management.

    Advice to Management

Step aside so that this organisation has a chance of being mended.

    Pros

Passionate staff and good work life balance

    Cons

as with a lot of the civil service, higher levels of management tend to be "sticky" and therefore not many positions in the senior leadership team comes around very often and this tends to stifle change and innovation

I have been working at Ofgem full-time

    Pros

Very supportive environment, good work life balance and embracing agile working. Work is interesting and varied (in my dept at least)

    Cons

Staff turnover very high - primarily due to salaries available at other employers particularly in London. as with all Civil Service - the layers of bureaucracy you have to go through can be demoralising.

    Pros

Nice people to work with, civil service so a good pension scheme and so so flexibility to your work/life balance (dependent on your line manager, not consistent throughout the organisation)

    Cons

Serious issues with senior management. There is an issue with the culture within the organisation. Very London centric even though they have a large office base in Glasgow. Very little chance of progression within your team unless you are based in London. There is an expectation to work all hours, commit 100% to your job but you are given no personal development incentive apart from more training opportunities but no pay reward.

    Pros

The people are friendly and great to work with. A high level of responsibility is provided to those that demonstrate themselves to be competent

    Cons

Quantitative analysis is often the most interesting area of the job but is regularly outsourced

I have been working at Ofgem (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice office location. Good work life balance. Depending on how much work you do, you can build up flexi time. Depending on which department/area you join, you will be given quite a lot of exposure to different lines of work across the company.

    Cons

Slow moving. Senior Management suffer from not being able to take a decision which leads to paralysis and meaningless data analysis of the work being carried out. Very low pay and no sign of improvement in the near future. Staff retention rate extremely low due to lack of promotional prospects and too many egos sitting at Senior Management level.

    Pros

Really interesting work that drives real positive benefits for consumers.

You get to work on high profile cases that often receive lots of media attention.

Get a lot of responsibility from very early on.

    Cons

Can sometimes be slow to get promoted and you have to interview to attain it.

Not the greatest number of development opportunities.
