More Pros and Cons

  1. "Internship with lots of projects!"

I worked at Ogilvy & Mather as an intern

    Pros

Interns were treated more like juniors than interns.
Really good mentor system that pairs interns with people within the company.

    Cons

Didn't get to do much concept driven work, mostly worked on projects that were already in motion.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up, and keep bringing in good interns! My experience was pretty positive, I felt very comfortable in the office.

I have been working at Ogilvy & Mather full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-fantastic people, truly some of the best I've ever worked with
-incredibly integrated in the Chicago office
    -iconic agency with amazing history
-most managers are great and treat those who are under them well
    -great clients and award-winning work
-free massages, lots of happy hours, cool office, free food, good PTO policy (closed between christmas and new years)

    Cons

-i'll echo everyone else here by saying that there aren't promotions or raises often - even cost of living raises but this is unfortunately somewhat standard in the industry
-often a lot of red tape to get things done

    Advice to Management

-reward the people who remain loyal to you and try to give raises to those who are deserving of them because they're more incentivized to stay
-create a clear career path for those who are entry/mid level in their careers

    Pros

World class, high end, and award-winning creative work. Very friendly, idea-driven employees.

    Cons

Difficult to get in and difficult to get promoted. Lots of large agency rhetoric. No review process. They should invest in the employees they currently have a little better.

    Advice to Management

Take more stock into your employees, keep them happy and reward them. Set goals and and reviews.

I have been working at Ogilvy & Mather full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A lot of hardworking and smart people and an opportunity to work for the legendary "Ogilvy" brand. It's very acceptable (and encouraged) for employees to move to another group or department for career growth (the process may be slow). Good health benefits, company-contributed 401(k) plan, free onsite gym (for staff, not freelance), onsite medical facility that can diagnose and prescribe medications among other things (staffed with a P.A. and nurses), lots of discounts to take advantage of, several professional networks. Good vacation policy and lots of holiday time off.

    Cons

Infrequent and low raises (across all levels). Depending on your department and manager, promotions can be a long-time coming. Expense report system is very difficult and time-consuming and it can take employees a long time to get reimbursed (major understatement).

    Advice to Management

Give employees timely (i.e. NOT once every five years or more) and competitive raises. You will continue to lose good talent if this isn't made a priority (i.e. referring to the good talent in the "lower" ranks, not the senior executives or C-suite). Fix the expense reporting problems. Cut out the bureaucracy that stifles the ability to get things done across departments.

I have been working at Ogilvy & Mather full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There truly is no culture like Ogilvy's. When they say it's a family the mean it.

    Cons

That said, no family is perfect. Upward mobility in for title and salary can be a little tricky.
