Great Place to Teach
Jan 24, 2023 - ABE/GED Teacher in Columbus, OHRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good Pay/Benefits No Homework Little Classroom Prep
Cons
Inmates can be unpleasant to work with. High level of security places restrictions on what you can do in the classroom. Room for advancement if you want to branch out in the department.

Pros
If you can breathe and count to 3 you’re hired.
Cons
Literally everything. Inmates aren’t held responsible for anything, staff are always punished for dumb stuff, they want you to give Gatorade to assaultive, non compliant inmates??? Sure someone can punch me in the face but I’m not allowed to defend myself, just gotta give Gatorade. ODRC is a JOKE. don’t apply. Being assaulted, jacked on, talked to like a piece of meat, disrespected by your department and union, disrespected by inmates with no repercussions, day in and day out. No appreciation, no kudos, all fake lies. The directors main goal is to suck the toes of the inmates and make them happy while she DESTROYS her staff. She’s useless and horrible to work for. She’s taken the department to the lowest I had seen in 5 years. DONT DO IT.

Pros
Pay Benefits Camaraderie among officers
Cons
Abusive management Central office turns a blind eye Culture of blaming officers Ignores staff assaults

Pros
So the job is very rewarding on days and the remote option is amazing. You spend about 25% of your time in the office and the other in the field/court. The health insurance is great and the union is pretty helpful. Our salaries are public information so you know when your next raise is coming or not.
Cons
I don't get why this position isn't a sworn law enforcement officer like in other states, I feel that ODRC is the step child of the state. I don't like that in order to receive your pension you have to do 32 years which is a long time.

Pros

Cons
It can be exhausting and overwhelming.

Toxic environment
Feb 22, 2023 - Correctional Officer in London, OHRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
State job so benefits are decent.
Cons
The staff have a clique mentality and if you don't participate in there idea of whats appropriate they will target you. This includes Officers and Supervisors. They feel you should have fun bothering the inmates and make a game of it.
