I have been working at Ohio Legislative Service Commission full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

This position affords you a first-hand immersion into the workings of the Ohio General Assembly. You get the rare opportunity to build connections with legislators from across the state, and really feel as if your work makes an impact. On top of that, the LSC Fellowship Coordinators are fantastic.

    Cons

As with almost any public service position, the pay level is sub-par. This is simply not something you go into in order to make money.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the current structure of the fellowship; from open communication to monthly seminars, it's the little bonuses that this position affords that makes it worthwhile.

    Pros

The benefits were good and it was a good way to enter into working for the state

    Cons

The management was horrible. They promoted people into management positions who had no people skills at all. They had good bugetary skills but zero management skills. The hours were horrible during the state budget but you did get decent comp time. Not much opportunity to grow within the agency.

    Advice to Management

Send your managers to trying on how to work with people.
