    Pros

remote work, flexible, good interpersonal environment, progressive team, world-wide site, plus I enjoy feeling like I am helping people

    Cons

No real complaints. Sometimes difficult to feel heard by developers, but overall not really a problem

    Advice to Management

Again, no real complaints. I find the environment extremely healthy and stable, progressive, and that it has a lot of potential. I love working remotely and flexibly.

I worked at OkCupid part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's work in the tech industry and a good resume builder due to brand recognition.

    Cons

I found OkCupid to be an exceptionally toxic work environment with unfair labor practices that hovered just above what was permissible by law. Corporate organization seemed sloppy, and development of their product poorly managed.

The company appeared more dedicated to the bottom line than to developing a good relationship with its workers--but ironically, had little to no oversight making sure that their money was being put to good use.

    Advice to Management

Value the folks that work for you and follow through on commitments.

I worked at OkCupid full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

OkCupid was a very cushy place to work, pays very well, good benefits, and start-upy perks (free breakfasts, once-a-week lunch provided by the company, etc). There are a lot of smart people working at the company.

    Cons

There seems to be a lack of communication, organization, and management. The lack of any real project management makes a lot of people completely unaccountable for their work. I don't think you can expect designers and developers to manage themselves.

    Advice to Management

Project management would help make people more accountable for their work, if only because not every person you hire would be as dedicated/focused as the original founders.

I have been working at OkCupid (More than 3 years)

    Pros

we work from home and the salary is competitive

    Cons

senior management doesn't care at all about what happens and we are just replaceable robots. if you care about user safety you don't want this job.

    Advice to Management

    Start caring about the users

I have been working at OkCupid full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I've worked at several different firms in the tech industry, and there's no question that this has been the best experience I've had. Co-workers are friendly, intelligent, helpful, and fun. Excellent benefits and salary, and a great product of which we're all pretty proud.

Atmosphere may be changing as all of the founders have left now and the organization is growing rapidly, but that remains to be seen.

    Cons

Located in New York, not my favorite place but it works

I worked at OkCupid full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay. Nice people. They are under IAC so you get great benefits and fun parties. Good for your resume.

    Cons

I was working on the frontend team, which is not where the magic is happening at OkCupid by any stretch of the imagination. They've got a proprietary scripting language (so don't expect to be sharp on PHP/Ruby/NodeJS when going back to the real world), and have an obsession with A/B testing every design decision. I spent my time implementing these tests, and then implementing the results of these tests, not unlike a robot. No wonder the requirements for JavaScript are so low.

Also, deployment/version control are a disaster.

I suspect that these gripes are due to the focus being put on their backend and software engineering teams, which get more or less all of the glory. It's a bummer, because they have (still) some wonderful people on the frontend team.

    Advice to Management

Invest a bit more in your frontend team. You've got great people there, use them.

    Pros

    1. it's a smallish team of extremely smart people.
    2. good ideas and hard work are both noticed and rewarded.
    3. bad developers are treated as replaceable automatons and tend to leave quickly.
    4. recruiting has hit a real stride, and all the newest devs here are brilliant and appreciated.
    5. OkCupid makes thousands of dates a day and hundreds of serious relationships happen.

About #2. Since I've been here we haven't lost any developers who added constructively to the team, and some bad apples have left. There's no one sucky left.

    Cons

    1. we need another conference room. it's sometimes hard to find a place to meet
    2. I'm getting fat from all the free breakfast

    Advice to Management

Stop caring if the site works in IE6 already. Practice your trivia skills. 11th place in last night's happy hour?

    Pros

    - company is quick to recognize hard work (promote, give raises, etc.)
    - high level of intelligence of co-workers / overall intellectual atmosphere (almost all employees are math/cs people)
    - easy access to management
    - startup-like atmosphere in a company that's actually already made it (i.e. secure)
    - the work you do affects people's lives
    - NYC street cred
    - yes, you can actually use your job to get dates

    Cons

    - quiet work environment
    - sometimes slow to actually go live with code I've worked on
    - missing some of the startup frills (free lunch everyday, beer fridays)

Current Employee - Software Engineer in New York, NY
    Recommends

    Pros

the release cycle is fast - tweaks can be launched minutes after you think of them
your work at OkCupid really makes a difference in the world
    coworkers are smart and easygoing
the office is an open floor plan, so communication is easy
you get to work on some pretty cool technical challenges
the development framework includes the best HTML templating language I've seen and allows you to avoid less pleasant aspects of C++ like manual memory management
management provides helpful guidance when you need it without being micromanaging

    Cons

the open floor plan means a little less privacy
the custom development framework means a learning curve when you start
the development process is relatively unstructured. This is bad if you need a tight structure (like hard deadlines) to get your work done.
