I worked at Oklahoma Christian University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Some bright and engaged students, staff and faculty.
The original mission to serve and focus most resources on students; that has shifted as upper management has carved out their silos.

    Cons

Upper management salaries and benefits greatly exceed the low faculty and staff salaries and benefits. A cost of living increase does not occur every year which means less earning power over time. Low wages force many staff and some faculty to seek other employment opportunities. Upper management tell faculty and staff that the work is a mission, but the upper management are paid a lot more than missionaries. Management and faculty cliches prevent transparent and fair opportunities for promotion and career growth; people are judged by who they know and how they appear. Many talented people leave the university because they are not valued, appropriately recognized, and adequately compensated.

    Advice to Management

Try living on staff wages if you all (management) are truly committed to the mission field. Fully disclose to prospective students and parents the total amount of the compensation packages of the top 100 employees at the university; let them decide what OC's true values may be.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Oklahoma Christian University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Progressive employer with great benefits and a more paid leave and holidays than any of my friends at other schools and way more than friends in other kinds of jobs. Faculty, staff and administration who care about students and about each other make OC a great place to work. Administrators strive to make campus environment family friendly and inclusive of diverse ideas and backgrounds. Top management listens to employees and makes policy adjustments to improve conditions for work. OC also provides me fun and rewarding work. I get to see so many lives improved on a daily basis and to witness super-talented students, faculty, staff and visitors doing extraordinary things all the time.

    Cons

Financial challenges have limited compensation increases, but things are improving. A lot of ambitious and talented people starting their careers here, so not all of us can be promoted as soon as we would hope. Still a great place to work and gain experience for a career in a lot of fields, not just higher education.

    Advice to Management

Continue to listen to employees who are trying to make things better. Continue to speak truth and deal fairly. Don't let critical voices keep you from doing good works and bringing diversity to campus.

I have been working at Oklahoma Christian University full-time

    Pros

The students! Such smart and amazing kids.
Benefits are nice. 403(b) match at 6%
You get to use and experience things on campus. Ex: Gym, trail, incredible speakers

    Cons

Politics, politics, politics. It is a "it's who you know, not what you know" place
Budgets are tight, but it is improving
    Low staff morale
    Low pay
Not a lot you can do to advance

    Advice to Management

Learn to say "no". There are some students that should not be let into OC, based on their merit. Once they drop out after once semester, they leave with a huge bill and a bad taste in their mouth. Hurts retention and doesn't help the student at all.

A lot more could be done to teach kids how to graduate debt free.

Get rid of some departments. There are some absolutely useless departments at this school. Get rid of the fat and focus on the stuff that is growing (nursing and gaming department). Or better yet, save the money or apply it to the massive pile of debt.

Financial department though is run well. Amazing boss, so kind and encouraging.
