    Pros

Great families; great kids; flexibility and ownership over curriculum; great city

    Cons

Teachers are not valued as they should be; Poorly run schools; Bad administrators and principals allowed to stay in their jobs with no recourse; Principals not held to high standards; Budget issues; If you're principal is a great manager, there is no better place to teach

    Advice to Management

Do a better job evaluating your principals so that terrible principals are moved out of schools and can be replaced with more effective managers; high turnover is not due to low salary as much as it is due to poor management

    Pros

The students need you. They need teachers and school staff to encourage them and believe in them to achieve their dreams.

    Cons

It's a challenging system to make a difference in.

I worked at Oklahoma City Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

OKCPS is an exiting place to work. You may get tired, but you'll never get bored.

    Cons

OKCPS is disorganized and consistently fails to make decisions that are good for students and staff. This is true for all levels from superintendents, to school administrators, to classroom instructors. I often felt like the district was doing more to provide road blocks than remove them.

    Advice to Management

Think about the long-term effects and burden of policies before you implement them.

    Pros

The students and the teachers are good to work with. The inner city seems to be moving in a positive direction.

    Cons

Hours and hours of planning on your own time.
Very demanding and high expectations on the all of the new teacher evaluations.

I have been working at Oklahoma City Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great opportunities to make a difference in the lives of kids who need an education, many grateful parents

    Cons

limited resources available that would actually help students (shortages in nurse, counselors, psych, reading specialists, etc.), district is too large to make effective changes needed, "specialists" in admin building have disconnect with what actually happens in classrooms, lack of discipline support

    Advice to Management

Always consider the student when making decisions. Spending tons of money on new curriculum probably isn't the best use of our resources.

I have been working at Oklahoma City Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Our students really need and love us. They give teaching a purpose.

    Cons

The district is usually always changing something, or in disarray. Education thrives on positive, beneficial changes, but these changes are made without warning/notice/preference/reason. Sometimes I wonder if the district employees think about children when they are making the decisions at all. So many of our kids lack resources for their communities and the district should be working together with communities more to lift up our schools.

    Pros

    Cons

Parents and staff are not always supportive to teachers
Pay does not fit all the extra work you do, and are required to do.

    Advice to Management

support teachers, especially the new ones.

I worked at Oklahoma City Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The flexibility of being a traveling teacher within the district.

    Cons

Some of the principals did not support the orchestra program so it was challenging to teach at those schools.
