I worked at Oklahoma Department of Corrections full-time

    Pros

I loved the job duties and most of the employees were committed to their job and work environment was okay.

    Cons

Management at the individual institution seemed to make quick decisions regarding personnel. I saw a lot of people hired and then get fired quickly...mainly corrections officers and they have an extremely difficult job and are hard to maintain. I am not saying to be easy on employees but please be fair.

    Advice to Management

I think the very management is committed to doing a good job and believes in the work and mission. At the individual institution level, at least one warden talks to employees the same as inmates. Expecting high standards is warranted but please learn some people skills.

I worked at Oklahoma Department of Corrections full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some flexibility in working hours; had my own office

    Cons

Very stale and institutionalized culture; most people were there just to collect a paycheck; staff and management very cliquish; upper and middle management created a culture where long-term employees and former employees held more sway than less tenured employees in management positions, thus undermining supervisors and program managers

    Advice to Management

Upper and middle management should listen to the expertise of the people they've hired and let them do their jobs instead of being afraid of "where the bodies are buried."

I have been working at Oklahoma Department of Corrections full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It provides a service to the public and protects the public from people who have shown that they for one reason or another chose not to adhere to society rules.

    Cons

The pay an correctional employee receives in Oklahoma makes it hard to recruit and maintain good employees. Therefore the turn around rate of employees is very, very, very high.

    Advice to Management

The State of Oklahoma must find away to pay Correctional Employees a salary that would bring people who are interested in this type of work and would be willing to stay with the Agency knowing that they can make a salary that's they can support themselves and their families on.

I worked at Oklahoma Department of Corrections full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Salary, great co-workers, health benefits , and possibilities to advance.

    Cons

Structure of this facility is horrible, do not trust upper management, and always accused of being a "dirty" corrections officer.

I have been working at Oklahoma Department of Corrections (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay is decent, especially being in a low cost of living state, great benefits and that's about it. Don't expect much because you WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!

    Cons

Hostile work environment, the employees just sit around and talk down on each other all shift long even when inmates are present. Can't rely on staff to be on time. Upper management schemes up ways to get rid of officers they do not like. Racial bigotry. Does not follow the holy book of policy that they throw in your face. Every officer I've came in contact with feels seemingly the same way. Home/Work life is horrible. No chance to rank up unless you're willing to bow to someone whose family tradition is to work for the department. Trying to turn an old medium yard with a distinct history into a work center/ community college. Would not recommend!

    Advice to Management

Get your head out of places where the sun don't shine and learn how to listen to your lower level staff.
