I worked at Olathe School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working with students who clearly want to learn, and are excited about learning
The admins generally care how you're doing

    Cons

Very low pay for entry classified staff (~$10-12k annually)
Job security has been an issue the past few years due to budget constraints
Very little feedback on job performance
If you aren't certified, advancement options are basically non-existent

    Advice to Management

Because of budget constraints and lack of cohesion, groups that are supposed to be working together often devolve into factions. This damages morale and thus inhibits student growth.

Fundraising is does not eliminate this problem: Find ways to involve your community beyond asking for money. Opportunities for social involvement that aren't ultimately fundraisers facades is sorely lacking.

I have been working at Olathe School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Professional, compassionate, loyal, rewarding. This district cares about the community and patrons. Children come first. The district hires and retains high-quality staff members.

    Cons

Education is a tough field. There are no cons. I love working in the Olathe School District. It has been my home for 32 years. I wouldn't change anything.

I worked at Olathe School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits and Work Schedule. Can work at some amazing schools and it can be the best experience of your life.

    Cons

HR doesn't seem to care about complaints from teachers. Can work at one school and have an amazing experience then get forced to transfer to another school and have a horrible experience. The favorites game is definitely played. If a favorite does something wrong it is swept under the carpet but if a non favorite does something wrong they are fired.

    Advice to Management

When you receive multiple complaints about the same administration, you should take them seriously. Good teachers are being run out by lead teachers and administrators who are bullies. This job is about what is best for the students and not one person's quest for personal glory.

I have been working at Olathe School District full-time

    Pros

A lot of good initiatives, friendly co-workers

    Cons

Need to be a member of the "good ol' boys club" to get promotions, be given opportunities

    Advice to Management

The "Olathe way" isn't the only way

I worked at Olathe School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Olathe is a more organized school district than others where I have previously worked.

    Cons

Some of the principals think too highly of themselves, show off to parents. Some principals were the hardest working principals I've ever had.

    Advice to Management

    Insularity can be a detriment.

    Pros

Para educators work only when children are in school. The schedule works great for having my own kids in Olathe schools. I am able to provide excellent health care for my family through the district.

    Cons

The only con would be the hourly pay rate. I am working mostly to provide health insurance for my family and to help the students.
