I have been working at Old Dominion Freight full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Top notch equipment, locations, and freight. On site mechanics fix issues in minutes, not hours. Dispatch answers phone, no waiting around on hold. Pay and benefits excellent, management cares about the employees.

    Cons

Using federal transportation regulation loopholes to aviod paying local drivers overtime until you reach 12 hours a day, or 60 or more in a week. Standard practice within the industry.

    Advice to Management

Give pickup and delivery drivers sales training across all of the services we provide, and give us bonuses for adding additional sales. Upsell!!

I have been working at Old Dominion Freight full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There is a family environment and everyone is very helpful and we all get along. Senior management leads by example and treat everyone with respect.

    Cons

It is a large company and sometimes good people get lost and end up leaving. There can be a better emphasis on supervisor training that can lead to better retention.

    Advice to Management

Keep treating everyone like a family member and continue to train on proper communication between employees and management. Continue to be visible throughout the whole company.

I worked at Old Dominion Freight (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. 401k excellent, and great equipment.

    Cons

There is a buddy system at this job. Not the company as a whole, just the Richland, MS location. Rules and terms apply only to some, not everyone. Not sure why they even have a handbook.

    Advice to Management

Treat everyone fairly all across the board.

I have been working at Old Dominion Freight full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Starting pay around $17.50/hr and after a year you'll be up to about $22.50/hr. The dock supervisors are good. Most of them have been in your shoes at one point in our terminal. Best priced benefit package I've seen for health, dental, and other perks that I do not take advantage of.

    Cons

If full time you will have 50hr work week in five 10hr days. tough hours, usually graveyard shift for new hires. You're exposed to the elements you'll have no paid time off for the first year and requesting a day off in that time can be like pulling teeth.

    Advice to Management

more straps, only those who work here will understand

I have been working at Old Dominion Freight part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, people are rough around the edges but generally friendly, equipment is top of the line, yearly raises are very substantial, flexible hours for part-time workers

    Cons

Exposed to all weather - basically the same as working outside, very physically demanding, no formalized support - you have to make your own allies on the dock or figure out how to work entirely alone

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing, all good from the ground level

I have been working at Old Dominion Freight part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The training they give you is top of the line they leave no stone unturned. They really care about doing the job the right way and keeping the customer happy. In return they reward you accordingly.

    Cons

If you can put up with the cold weather being that it's an open dock Then you will be fine. My advice bundle up. Chicago winters are no joke!

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. By creating a positive environment at work, and keeping folks at ease you have better workers for that.

I have been working at Old Dominion Freight (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good 401k match, excellent benefits, good equipment

    Cons

lack of communication within management , harsh weather conditions on dock, long hours with no overtime pay

    Advice to Management

Overall a good company well managed, however I feel there is a lot of favoritism that comes in to play when promotions are handed out.

I worked at Old Dominion Freight full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good company good benefits, pay is ok.

    Cons

Long physical labor hours. Expected to meet production like schedule with minimal to no help!

    Advice to Management

Operating that lean of a crew is too physically and mentally draining regardless of age. Cut bonus to upper management and get some help on the docks. More than likely this will improve your turn over ratio. (ROI)

    Pros

Newer trucks. Mechanics keep equipment well maintained. Good communication with management.

    Cons

Driving is stressful. People are crazy on the highway. On average, 35K fatalities annually in US.

    Advice to Management

Most of the training is watching old DVD's. Get current and make training more personal and relevant.
