I worked at Old Republic Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A very nice company to work for, friendly work environment with supervisors who care about their employees. Excellent work life balance, usually 40 hours per week with very occasional travel to visit insured clients or attend training. Great team environment where everyone helps out for vacation/sick days and you don't return to a pile of work in your inbox. If you're looking for a claims position without working evenings and weekends this would be a great company for you.

    Cons

Below average salary (admittedly, somewhat balanced by working a standard 40 hour week).

I worked at Old Republic Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My boss and co-workers were amazing. We had a great office dynamic, but I had the impression that this was the exception rather than the rule

    Cons

Not paid enough. The company did not offer any incentives (continuing education assistance). Poor vacation and personal time packages. Some employees in other departments did the bare minimum to keep their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Reward those who work hard, not just those who have been skating by for years doing the bare minimum.

    Pros

Good benefits, friendly people. Upright company.

    Cons

Not much pay. Lots of very dumb people.

    Advice to Management

Recognize good middle management. Take money away from bad middle management.

    Pros

    - Scheduled work week is 37.5 hours. They don't preach work/life balance but it's definitely there.
    - Management has a great deal of experience and have been with the company for ages.
    - The employees are good at what they do. Most have been brought in at an entry level position 20+ yrs ago learned the business.
    - No layoffs but older employees clogged the upper levels of management without having much more than very basic computer skills
    - Family atmosphere and small group
    - Benefits are decent but 401k match is with company stock.

    Cons

    - The software they rely on heavily was created in the 1970s and was not Windows based.
    - Management has a short fuse and often looked down on employees. Continuing education is not encouraged by management.
    - Titles mean nothing. Everyone is a AVP or VP of something so they can interact with client management.
    - Lack of volunteer activities/commitment to the community by this company and parent.
    - The facilities, the office, restrooms and break room are old. Up until 3-4 years ago, they still had a smoke room in the building.

    Advice to Management

    - Update everything - software, computers and building.
    - Treat staff members with more respect and show less ego.
    - Give back to the community since your profits are based on home owners repaying their mortgages.

I worked at Old Republic Insurance (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Management have been in this industry for a long time, knows their stuff.
HR is very nice and helpful.
    - Can work here forever. Hardly ever lay anyone off.
    - Gives a chance to people with little or no insurance experience (which is what they prefer in order to spend the least amount of money).
    - Friendly coworkers.
    - Provides free coffee on every floor.
    - Helpful IT staff.

    Cons

    - Benefits are ok.
    - Pay is terrible.
    - Very limited room for growth.
    - Employees are mistreated.
    - Very strict on clocking in and out.
    - Although they added a TV in the lunchroom, they need to replace the old brown ugly furniture with nicer ones.
    - Hire more staff so that your current employees are not swamped with a ton of work.
    - Push for a more healthy lifestyle by offering gym discounts and rewards.
    - Become a more eco friendly company by having more recycling bins around the building.

    Advice to Management

    - Improve your interpersonal skills.
    - Treat your employees with respect. Treat them like adults. Do not lecture your employees like little children.
    - Give employee recognition to those who work hard with prizes or days off.
    - Provide company picnics to boost employee moral.
    - Improve your employee communication.
