I worked at Oldcastle full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The work is challenging and interesting.

    Cons

Executives lead employees by fear. Most people are constantly in fear of losing their job. Advertises promoting within but it almost never happens. Numerous long term employees let go due to restructuring. Extremely unstable work environment due to pressure from management. Employees expected to work long hours and the rule of thumb for incentive is a pat on the back. Employee performance has very little to do with... compensation. The motive from the top down is make money at all costs no matter what the effect is on employees.

    Advice to Management

Your business thrives on people. Treating people with respect and showing some form of appreciation instead of tools to make money will go a long way. Actions speak louder than words.

I worked at Oldcastle full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great benefits, amazing support management, pay was good, company invested into manufacturing facilities, employees are like family. Paid holidays, good pto plan.

    Cons

Very long hours for salaried and hourly employees. Weekend work very often. Differences between block and bag plants that could cause issues with middle management. Some managers were held accountable, whereas others were not. Some managers have been promoted due to length of service instead of merit. Long term employees can be difficult to see new points of view.

    Advice to Management

Listen to everyone. This includes your plant management team. Remember that all sites are different, with different cultures. Do not fall into the thought that all sites can and will operate the same. Continue the good work with the support and corporate management.
