I have been working at Olin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Olin Corporation, Winchester Division, Oxford Operations pays well for the location.

    Cons

You sacrifice your personal life, for the pay check. Not only that, if you think you might have a chance at first shift in the first 5 years of employment, think again! Also?? Don't be a great worker/hard worker -- because suddenly, that off-shift you were told you'd only be working for 6 months, can't afford to lose you and the result will be you being passed over for day shift positions that should have been yours, based on the requirements listed in the Employee Handbook.

    Advice to Management

Take the personal decision OUT of the shift bid. Make being on first shift a privilege reserved for those who can maintain certain standards. Stop "training" new employees on First Shift and send them to shift within a few weeks of hire, so that your employees that work hard for the privilege to move to first shift, have a chance.

Also, make more opportunities for in house (Oxford) employees, rather than bringing down your Unionized hourly workers, promoted to Non-Unionized Salary workers, to train people who are interested in working hard and making Winchester their future.

I have been working at Olin (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Decent benefits & 401K plan

    Cons

    Work environment, morale, management, ethics

    Advice to Management

Treat employees with respect and reward them for a job well done rather than adding more job tasks and no additional pay.

I worked at Olin (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits (in Illinois), Great, dedicated work force (who's left in Illinois) Leaving for a better job and finding what a world class company is really about, as a result.

    Cons

Management put in place through nepotism and butt kissing. Very inexperienced people in office and floor most without any kind of degree or mgmt training which creates hostile work environment. Work 6-7 days per week (in Illinois) with absolutely no family time for hourly employees. Bad mgmt decisions leading to demise of historic company. Most mgmt wanting to move up no matter the cost to product or people. Hourly employees treated badly unless you re in the click.

    Advice to Management

Hire Mgmnt with minimum Associates Degree. Cut out nepotism, favoritism and don't promote from floor unless you have extensive training or Asso. Deg. Do homeowork and make informed decisions.

I have been working at Olin full-time

    Pros

The people outside of management are great people to work with.

    Cons

No real guidance. Many people are made managers when they are not cut out to be managers.Have been with the company for over a year and feel like accomplishments are minimal and still don't feel connected.

    Advice to Management

When employees come to you with concerns for their jobs, listen and work towards making situation better instead of ignoring them.

I have been working at Olin full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great pay and above average benefits kept me coming back each week. Olin offered educational assistance to its employees in East Alton which was an added benefit as well.

    Cons

The forced overtime, poor management, and lack of respect towards dedicated and hard working employees has made working for Olin Winchester a miserable existence. If your in the click you got it made, but get on the other side of the fence and there is hell to pay whether your a responsible employee or not. A "hostile work environment" in a Machine Shop, what does that say for this company?

    Advice to Management

Respect and value every employee in our organization.

I have been working at Olin full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay and above average benefits, many employment locations available. Potential for increased profits and growth via improved leadership.

    Cons

Poor managerial approach from middle management and up. Very confrontational, little to no teamwork between salary and hourly personnel and union. Little to no accountability across all employees. Senior management places little to no value on employee well being, despite constant espousing of said values. Deep rooted mistrust between senior management and hourly employees has lead to a very antagonistic relationship and unpleasant work environment for everyone.

    Advice to Management

Move into the 21st century, you treat your employees as an expense but they are really your biggest and best investment. Great employees are made with great leadership not found and great employees can become poor employees with mismanagement. Match your actions to your stated values.
