I have been working at Oliver Wyman full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very down to earth company full of extra smart people. Not obnoxiously competitive. Non-hierarchical. I do interesting work & feel my efforts are rewarded.

    Cons

Travel can be a taxing but the company supports ideas for making it things work if you have an alternative idea. The bottom line is we need to be at the client, but as much as they can, managers are open to flexibility. I'm especially grateful I'm not required to go into the office when not at the client; working from home is a real thing since I'm judged on my output.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the open dialogue about flexible working arrangements; I'm so impressed by senior management's attention to work/life balance.

    Pros

The best reasons to work for Oliver Wyman are the international experiences, the career development opportunities, and the people.

    Cons

As with most management consulting jobs, the travel can be tiring at times.

    Advice to Management

Continue to develop the Oliver Wyman brand on college campuses.

    Pros

    - Extremely competitive pay
    - Entrepreneurial , relatively relaxed culture
    - People are extremely friendly and collaborative
    - Strong cultural emphasis on work-life balance

    Cons

    - Brand is strongest in Europe
    - Firm has been experiencing some growing pains as it moves from being a relatively small boutique consulting firm to a being a major player
    - Expect to travel frequently

    Advice to Management

    - Continue to recruit top talent
    - Work harder at providing meaningful exit opportunities for the many consultants who will not stay until partnership
    - Hire MBAs to boost brand recognition; offer to cover MBA expenses for top performing consultants (would serve as an effective way to retain talent; these individuals can go on to be ambassadors for the firm)

    Pros

Top level strategy engagements that are challenging and interesting
    Great people/culture
Fast upward mobility and flexibility in changing between business units
Large moves toward fully integrating all recent acquisitions

    Cons

Still some growing pains as acquisitions are incorporated into business
Need to work on improving recruiting effort and brand given the current size of firm

    Advice to Management

Continue investing in brand and a strong recruiting effort...we've grown faster than our competitors and need to make sure we go to bat as firm of comparable size since we're anything but niche at this point

    Pros

Oliver Wyman provides a faster track to partnership than competitors. Partially this is achieved through faster specialization. No MBA is required for advancement (though they are sponsored if you want one). The extra time in the industry is viewed as more beneficial than the MBA. The culture is very meritocratic, entrepreneurial and team-oriented with almost no work-place politics to deal with.

    Cons

If you're not in consulting for the long-haul, it offers a less-clear "value proposition." The brand name isn't as good as competing firms, which may be important for your next career (though I hope this will slowly change). The lack of emphasis on an MBA may hinder your future career choices outside Oliver Wyman unless you make obtaining one a personal priority.

    Advice to Management

Stay true to the founding principles of the firm (Oliver, Wyman and Company). Don't make OW into Bain, McKinsey, and BCG...force them to be more like us.

I have been working at Oliver Wyman full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    1. The laid-back, open culture - casual dress-code applies every day, and first year consultants are expected to deal with Partners from day 1
    2. Variety of work - even within our industry specialist groups there is an amaxing variety of work
    3. Quick path to Partnership - 6-10 years is the norm

    Cons

Work-life balance - as well as traveling 4 days a week, most weeks, work is anywhere between 45 and 75 hours a week on top of that

    Advice to Management

Don't make the place too corporate
