I have been working at Oliver Wyman full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very down to earth company full of extra smart people. Not obnoxiously competitive. Non-hierarchical. I do interesting work & feel my efforts are rewarded.

    Cons

Travel can be a taxing but the company supports ideas for making it things work if you have an alternative idea. The bottom line is we need to be at the client, but as much as they can, managers are open to flexibility. I'm especially grateful I'm not required to go into the office when not at the client; working from home is a real thing since I'm judged on my output.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the open dialogue about flexible working arrangements; I'm so impressed by senior management's attention to work/life balance.

    Doesn't Recommend

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Oliver Wyman full-time

    Pros

Strong financial risk practice. Good place to develop quant skills.

    Cons

Poor culture - Not the most EQ sophisticated company. Very little strategy work, a lot of number-crunching technical work sponsored by mid to low level management in client companies.

    Advice to Management

Create a diverse culture. Migrate away from the low-skill technical number-crunching projects and develop strategy work to fully merit being a strategy consultancy.

    Pros

    - Significant training and professional development

    Cons

    - Lack of culture
    - Lack of transparency in staffing

I have been working at Oliver Wyman full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Fast tracking opportunities (common to management consulting)
    - Down to earth culture, we don't take ourselves too seriously
    - Very competitive salary and bonus structure

    Cons

    - Challenging travel requirements and long hours (common in management consulting)
    - Under valued brand outside of Financial Service compared to MBB despite high quality of work and mandate complexity
    - Some mandates are closer to staff augmentation and not as high profile as I thought when I first started
    - No control on assignments (although this is part of the management consulting model)
    - MBA sponsorship used as a retention tool, management don't really encourage this path
    - Weak manager training due to consultant-driven (instead of post MBA) recruiting model. Training and culture doesn't provide tools required to become a good manager

    Advice to Management

    - Invest more in producing white papers and get our name out there...
    - Allocate higher spend per head on learning and development for consultants coming from smaller offices
