I worked at Olympic Steel part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The leaders in certain areas in management that were open to new ideas made the place great! I had an extremely great experience working with the shipping department as they were down to earth people who cared a lot about their jobs. They put in long hours and always had a smile on their face. While in the shipping department I got to meet some of the shop workers who were always super friendly and hard at work. I was also able to work with the purchasing department. I have to say, what a fun and more importantly dedicated group of people! They worked their butts off, and always got the job done. The inside sales department was great. Everyone worked well with each other and really the inside sales department was the backbone for the outside sales department. Which leads me to the outside sales department, from my experience the many outside sales representatives I met and worked with were great people who took the time to listen to the inside reps and support staff. The support staff, including the receptionist and buyers were always a pleasure to talk with and had great ideas to help the company improve budget wise. The accounting department was always a pleasure, as well as the programmers and really every single person that I really got the time to meet at Olympic Steel I had a good experience with.
Every single person that I really got the time to meet at Olympic Steel had a story. They were all good people and I feel honored to have had the opportunity to work with everyone at Olympic Steel. The experience that I gained from Olympic Steel is irreplaceable and I could not have asked for a better place to mature and grow.

    Cons

-No room for growth in my particular position until I obtained a full four-year degree.
-From a younger standpoint, it was a extremely traditionally styled experience with management.

    Advice to Management

The only constructive feedback I would give would be that communication between departments has shortages sometimes. More communication between departments especially between management and other staff. In my opinion, that might solve a lot of issues. (An anonymous comment box - email department HR etc. might be helpful)

I worked at Olympic Steel full-time

    Pros

Its all about who your friends with, they have a "good ole boy" society. If you don't fit in you won't see any raises or advancement at this place.

    Cons

Many too many to even began to name. Most people working in the corporate office are over paid. They are so behind in technology its a shame.

    Advice to Management

Get up to speed, and hire a workforce based on talents not who you know.

I have been working at Olympic Steel (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Health insurance. Very little in pros. I suppose the holiday pay is decent 10 paid holidays a year too much you can use whatever you want

    Cons

Terrible management, Extreme nepotism. The company gives you absolutely no reason to excel or go above and beyond or to even care if you do a good job. The only motivation and Feedback you get is negative. The Formans and managers are so out of touch with what actually happens on the floor it's ridiculous. Instead of talking to you like a normal person they scream and yell and talk down to you like you're a five-year-old The pay sucks the general attitude an moral is horrible. They go out of the way to make you feel like nothing but a number on the bottom line. I don't care how desperate You are this is not a place you want to work

    Advice to Management

Suck the barrel of a shotgun
