I have been working at Omidyar Network as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

An organization with an inspiring mission and vision to be part of. All employees have years of experience in Venture Capital and investment. People are very nice and willing to share their knowledge and experiences.

    Cons

Most people are over 35 years old, so there is not much youth energy in the office. But, ON people like what they do and that what makes working at ON amazing!

    Advice to Management

Consider hiring more young people to have bring fresh perspectives to the company.

I have been working at Omidyar Network full-time

    Pros

Good balance between impact, scale and returns. Always learning, growing, evolving and pushing the field forward.

    Cons

Not a consulting shop or a banking shop that has a standard process for promotion every two years. If people expect that, they should look elsewhere.

    Pros

Important, inspiring, innovative vision and approach. Most of the people are top-notch and care deeply about their work. Great benefits and work flexibility.

    Cons

Behavior that is counter to ON's core values is tolerated and big people issues are ignored by the leadership year after year.

    Advice to Management

I wish I could have worked at ON for a very long time because of the mission, vision, impact and innovation. Take a hard look at the second level leadership in the US. It isn't what you think it is

I worked at Omidyar Network as a contractor

    Pros

Strong mission-driven culture; everyone there dedicated to the mission. Its an opportunity to be on the front line of impact investing and international development, which provides a lot of opportunity to learn and grow. In addition to being dedicated to the mission, your colleagues are smart and driven.

    Cons

The organization is top heavy. Almost all junior staff has a masters degree. While people are driven, there sometimes lacks the energy that comes with having more young people in the office.

    Advice to Management

Create a better career path for your highly qualified, hard-working junior staff to succeed. This starts with empowering everyone to participate in strategic decision making.

    Pros

Exciting space to be working in. Very fulfilling career wise to be able to do good and bring about positive impact

    Cons

    - Over time, processes have been put in place, but still some way to go. Sometimes ambiguity can work to your disadvantage.
    - Key management is ebay/paypal or HBS clique and favor the same.

    Advice to Management

Recognising and rewarding talent is key to retaining the best!
