I worked at Online Buddies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great group of people. Fun place to work. Definitely a good place for an entry level person to start and kick off their career.

    Cons

Owners get in the way of this company being run well. Management is about 50/50 depending on who you deal with. No equity and awful bonuses. Salary way below similar companies.

    Advice to Management

Take a strategy and stick with it. Don't constantly pivot. Pay your employees better.

    Pros

I appreciated being paid at a competitive or even higher rate than many other customer service representative jobs. The benefits (health/dental insurance, paid time off, etc.) were generous. You used to be able to take your unused accrued sick and vacation time when you stopped working at OLB but then they changed the rule in 2008 (you could then only take your unused, accrued vacation time). Occasionally there would be parties with catered food and an open bar which was fun.

    Cons

I did not like how management did not allow us to take our unused, accrued sick time starting in 2008. It was very difficult to advance within the company even though we were told they preferred to promote from within they usually filled positions with those outside the company.

Some days were very slow (few calls to answer, few emails to respond, few ads to approve) so it could have been boring but other times we were bombarded with too many calls/emails/profiles to approve especially when the site would go down. Management would also pull you aside and talk down to you as if you were stupid when reviewing the most random, petty mistakes you made when approving profiles or responding to emails.

At times, there was too much drama and cattiness on the floor with some coworkers most of whom were gay. The atmosphere felt like you were being stabbed in the back, couldn't trust certain people, and as if you were being bullied.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within instead of hiring higher level positions from outside the company! Also, do not talk down to employees when they make mistakes on profile approvals or email responses. Get rid of toxic, contaminating individuals faster so the environment is more healthy!

    Pros

Great benefits, responsive management that are open to hearing input from employees, relaxed atmosphere, non-drama. This is really not a bad place to work at all, I left merely because I want to try and return to my original field.

    Cons

Speaking only as someone working the CS aspect of the company: a lot of alone time dealing with similar issues (but this is the same in any customer service job), having to troubleshoot basic computer skills with self proclaimed "computer illiterate" members. Really the job itself was not difficult, and the cons are more related to the customer service field in general rather than OLB

    Advice to Management

Hire more CS reps, to limit solitary shifts, but other than that you're good.

    Pros

A few really talented employees. Product has millions of users around the world. Plenty of potential. Market is ripe for disruption.

    Cons

Lack of focus. Toxic environment. Terrible product. Owner's influence counterproductive to success. Most of the people left don't have the skills to be hired anywhere else.

    Advice to Management

The person tasked with finding new employees is driving current ones away.

    Pros

There are a few people that are great to work with. You will have some good days.

    Cons

It's a tech company who functioning as if this is still 1980. You have heard how most companies offer great perks for their employees. Don't expect that here. Expect to have "It's almost good enough" be the common theme.

    Advice to Management

Not like it will actually come to fruition but start by treating employees better. Check out some other tech companies in the area, there is a MAJOR one down the street. Happy employees make a happy work environment, which makes the company money, not reducing what little perks they have, angering them routinely, and still expecting results.

I worked at Online Buddies full-time

    Pros

Products have a big following and audience. Kendall location is nice. You will be able to learn something. Some fun people working there.

    Cons

A tech company stuck in the dark-ages. Always fighting self-inflicted problems from within the org. Upper-management has no accountability and is misguided. Often without focus. No company vision, outlook, or anything to motivate staff. You will be frustrated most of the time.

    Advice to Management

Stay in-touch with staff -- focus on their well-being and their needs/lifestyle. Stop having so many closed-door meetings. Do more to integrate departments and make clear goals. Make short term investments for long term gains.
