I have been working at Online Business Systems full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The people are very friendly, great to work with, and know their stuff! - Salary seems to be consistent with the local market, if not a bit higher - Flexibility to try new tracks and learn new skills - Flexibility in working hours and location - Leadership cares about the employees, their families, and career trajectories

    Cons

    - Working at client sites can make you feel a bit disconnected - Office locations generally downtown, so commute can wear on you (not much to do about that) - Small company that everyone loves (and few leave), so opportunities to move up in the leadership chain can be limited (a con for some, but only as a result of a positive company)

It’s great to hear about both the pros and the cons. It reinforces what we need to keep doing and what areas require our focus in the future. Insofar as the pros, we try to be flexible when we can, within the confines of client requirements. We know this is of growing importance to folks and contributes to work/life balance. I agree that the leaders in each of our geographies/practices truly care about their teams. It’s not just about numbers and that’s what contributes to a truly unique culture. We know we need to figure out a way to ensure folks feel connected even when they work remotely from our offices. In some of the larger office we host more staff events, but we need to find ways to get the group together in some of our smaller geographies, more so everyone feels connected. Any suggestions on this are more than welcome. Lastly, we are in early discussions about an Emerging Leadership Development program. We recognize that over the next 10 years, there will probably be a whole new slate of leaders at OBS, and we must take steps now to develop those who have potential to step into leadership roles. You will be hearing more about this over the next year.

I have been working at Online Business Systems full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Online seems to legitimately care about their employees careers, and offers flexibility in professional development, and will listen and respond and help you find the right fit of client for you to pursue what you most want to do. Generally fun and happy culture with great people.

    Cons

Long term RRSP matching is an issue and continues to be so. Sometimes the discussion of balance seems disingenuous. Professional Development Budget is touted as part of our compensation, yet can be revoked during financially challenging times. I don't mind when this helps keep co-workers employed, but it is discussed as part of our compensation, and I dislike that it can be revoked at any time. PD budget has also not been updated in some time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I can honestly say that working with the various Business Units and our Corporate Leadership team, there is a level of caring that I have not seen elsewhere. That’s one of the reasons I am here after so many years. They do their best to take the needs of their team members into account when making decisions. That doesn’t mean everyone gets what they want, but I know every decision is weighed carefully and when we can accommodate we do. In the 20 years that I have been here, there have only been 2 short moratoriums on professional development. It is a measure of last resort as we know it is near and dear to folks who work here. Our professional development budgets are intended to provide learning and growth with the ultimate goal of building high performance teams. We recognize how important this investment in our team members is to our overall growth. In instances where a good case can be made to increase one’s annual budget, we have done so as it supports and aligns to the company’s strategic goals. RRSP matching continues to be on our radar. We are currently doing a review to understand different plan options and costs associated with each. We recognize many Onliners would like to see this benefit added.
