    Cons

    low pay
    benefits are very costly
not a job for a single parent but awesome for someone looking for pt or just a few extra bucks

I worked at Onslow County School District (Less than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed the split schedule. Since it was just a part time position, it gave me a lot of flexibility.

    Cons

    It was only part time.

I have been working at Onslow County School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pros of this employer is the ability to work with children and be a part of their education. I am able to utilize my Spanish skills and historical background to incorporate in lesson plans. I am in constant in communication with the family to help each child's progress. Being an assistant gives me the flexibility to do something I am passionate about and have a well balanced home life.

    Cons

The negative side of this job would be the pay. Education right now is not a competitive market and being an Instructional Assistant you are paid on low pay scale despite having a bachelors and experience.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management is to continue the fight for Instructional Assistant to continue to be in the classroom. With the focus on testing, assistants give teachers the ability to be able to continue learning in the classroom while other needs are being met; as well as, giving attention to students that need more one on one time.

I have been working at Onslow County School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

One of the best places to work. You get to know a lot of people.

    Cons

There are to many changes and no increase in pay for several years. I have been working for OCS for 12 years and my pay is only about 150 dollars more than when I started.

    Advice to Management

In the area I work there are to many Chiefs and not enough Indians.

I have been working at Onslow County School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and hours to work.

    Cons

Moving you around from grade to grade each year.

    Advice to Management

If something is working then let it be and don't change it.

I have been working at Onslow County School District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I love getting to work with Elementary school children of all grades (K-5th), not just limited to one grade and wanting to move up with your kids when the school year ends. A great opportunity to make a real connection with kids and, hopefully, make a difference in their lives.

    Cons

You really have to love working with kids. It's a challenge dealing with bullying, disrespectful, whining, LOUD children every day (and their parents!)

    Advice to Management

Management is great, but more raises would be nice.

I have been working at Onslow County School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Do your job well and the upper echelon has your back.
They go out of their way to help in times of need and crisis.
Disciplinary action is only taken after all other methods of correction are exhausted.

    Cons

The board and community don't support the professional educators enough.
    Pay sucks, but that's teaching.

    Advice to Management

Develop more outreach to all of the community to support you better, not just in times of voting on a school bond.

I have been working at Onslow County School District full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

This is a great district to work for. There are many supports in place for a new teacher. They will train a teacher in any area that they identify as an area for growth.

    Cons

The state of North Carolina is having budget shortfalls, other that the lower than average salary, everything is great at OCS.

    Advice to Management

Keep valuing the employees. I am glad that you do everything to address the needs of employees in mind while keeping the needs of the students at the forefront.
